I think the difference with that though mate is that Moyes was far more cautious then Martinez. We all accept that the way we play means every now and again we will get a drumming. Where as with Moyes if your starting off cautious and still get a drumming then that's a bit different, in my eyes anyway

A big change is seen in the players also, in the webchat with Osman he said the aims initially for the season is to come top!

Definitely, I'm taking nothing away from the job Moyes did. We needed his approach for the first part of his tenure to stabilise us. It's just nice to see us finally moving forward under Roberto after becoming stale and settling for what we had for a few years.

My biggest thing when Martinez first joined was how long it took players to regularly come out and praise his methods. There were far fewer mentions in the first month or two than I expected where our players talked about enjoying his new approach etc. I just assumed, with Martinez being more charismatic than Moyes, even with the respect they had for their former boss, the players would have been falling over themselves in the media to talk up Bobby.

Now, of course, everyone has nothing but glowing things to say about him, but the fact it took time to get there is a very good thing for me. It shows he had no fear in coming in to an established dressing room and challenging senior players to change their game and their mentality. I think interviews with players since then have claimed as much, Howard especially comes to mind.

The only draw back to this double edged sword is he's such a hot prospect, he's so sought after that I think we need to make rapid progress to match his ambition. I think eventually, if things carry on as they are, he will end up being chased by Spain/Barcelona and it'd be unlikely, regardless of where we are, we could stop him moving there. The position I hope/expect us to be in though, is that he doesn't leave us for another English club. That'll be the mark of whether we can still properly claim to dine at the top table, the true measure of whether we are just punching above our weight and the best of the rest or whether we are still the club we think we are.

Money is big, but it isn't everything, we've done everything right this window, using our resources to the max, if the season follows the same trajectory, if we genuinely compete, then I think in 2 years time we can be in a position whereby Martinez would only leave us for Barca/Spain.

I think it probably took a few months before all the players were comfortable with the new approach. It wasnt until the Newcastle match that everything really clicked.

I think if we win silverware and genuinely compete (could beat anyone home or away and really mix it up there), say to a Liverpool under Benitez, or Arsenal for the last few years, which is achievable, we'll be fine in keeping hold of him. It's just whether we can get to that standard.

One thing I think people forget is that his family is from here. Isn't his wife Scottish? And his child was born in the north west. Admittedly the draw of Barca may be too much but some of his roots are here now. He's building a project here that could far exceed what he did at Swansea (admittedly he did "phenomenal" work there) or Wigan.

We have a tendency as Blues to undersell our club.
We are an extremely attractive proposition for a manager (like Martinez himself).
Certainly he won't go anywhere in the world where he would enjoy more control and support than at our magnificent roaring beast of a club

Yeah, but money talks. I think if it ends up being Barca or Spain who grab him, then you just shrug your shoulders because there are a few jobs that are just stratospheric in what they can offer. On the other hand, depending on his view, as you said, he'll never have more control (and credit from the supporters) at one of those mega-clubs where they stand with their arms folded and start howling when they're not up 4-0 after 10 minutes.

Everton really could be the best of both worlds. A big, tradition-rich, successful club that remembers its roots but provides the manager with what he needs to be a consistent PL title contender.

I don't know if that will end up happening, but Roberto seems switched on enough to recognize what he has here and feel challenged (not hamstrung) by what he still needs to be creative about to be successful.

BTW, people love him in the States. It took a lot of me educating people during the WC, but when people found out that Tim Howard and that cool Spanish guy on ESPN with the brown shoes worked for the same club in England, we suddenly became reeeeeally boss to my Yankee brethren. Oh, and for the first time ever, Everton kits were available and advertised on the big online apparel websites.

For me one of the best games last season was the way we took on Arsenal at The Emirates. We had not seen the like of that for many years. Our EX always wanted to play safe.
