Tom Olliver was the first jockey to win back to back Grand Nationals, (Gay Lad in 1842 and Vanguard in 1843), the second being the first time the race was run as a handicap. Tom was so pleased with Vanguard that he had a sofa made from his hide when the horse popped its clogs.
