Not effective they say...

Very good response that. I’m not fully convinced that this Labour Party will be the government the country needs, but I’m 100% convinced that we have to kick the government out, in an emphatic manner, and give Labour a chance at the helm.

At this point, any incremental improvement should be seen as a win, the alternative is further and further decline under this lot.

Always going to be incremental any change in mainstream politics especially the UK. Extremes of Left or Right will just purge poverty onto millions more people and its why they always falter at the ballot, most recognize they have to live in the now. Talk revolution is good, action nah, just more talk of utopia v dystopia just merge into myopia.

I'm not convinced by Labour under Starmer but I'm dead sure that the current government are about as inept and/ or maligned awful.

She mentioned the magic money tree today too apparently. Hard to see any difference between them and the Tories on economic policy at the moment. It’s quite a leap of faith to assume they’re just saying this to get elected and will then change their tune when in power

Horrible Tory rat, her. Have never understood what she's doing in the Labour Party, going right back to Miliband's time in charge.

It's a dog whistle to blame the poor and sick, for being poor or sick. Tax the feckin' rich, people have had enough of austerity - it didn't work in the past, it's not working now, and it won't work in the future.

Why are we assuming she's saying that people are pulling a fast one? Maybe she's just saying we need to do a better job of getting people back on their feet so they can be independent again? The tax burden "is" the highest its been since the 1940s, so simply saying "raise taxes" doesn't seem like a realistic option. It's not a great situation we're in, as taxes are incredibly high, yet public services aren't good (and you can perhaps see my previous comments on pensions as where I think a lot of the cause of that is).

Is bullying people off benefits the way to make people independent or are they going to make life a whole lot more difficult for vulnerable people in order to appeal to nasty Tory voters who love that sort of thing?

Cant see any real alternative. When you have more people every year unable to work through sickness in an already ageing population with record levels of migration and crumbling public services with no headroom to borrow your way out…You have to do things to make it better. And ultimately whatever tax regime you have you need to stimulate the economy because otherwise you can set whatever levels you like and it will make no difference.

How much do you think kicking the people at the bottom of the pile will save or generate?

We've had 40 years of ever-tougher benefits regimes, hasn't fixed anything, but has caused untold misery and suffering. It's already one of the most miserly and inadequate systems in the developed world.

Wonder if she means pensioners, the workshy buggers cost 55% of welfare spending: https://www.gov.uk/government/publi...-and-caseload-tables-information-and-guidance

Probably needs to address in work benefits as well. Maybe if jobs paid appropriately or the UK was affordable we'd not fork out so much? Perhaps the benefits bill solution lies beyond individuals, hmm?
