I would expect things to be very hard for vulnerable as that's nearly always what happens in recessions, and we've just had the biggest one in a century. It's perhaps more illustrative to compare how Britain has done against France, Germany and our peers in Europe (I don't know the answer to that btw - it's not a leading question).

How many billionaires died as of a result of austerity?

One thing is for sure - if at the next election Corbyn can't at the bare minimum be the largest single party in parliament after a decade of austerity and incompetence from the Tories, then I don't want to hear any excuses for him and the hard left experiment will have completely and totally failed.

Hopefully then Labour can somehow return to common sense, perhaps reform the membership rules. Because it's a tragedy that we're looking at 15 years of Tory rule solely because there's no realistic alternative to them.

just a little hint to how a GE will go.... Tories have just won Abbey North (Daventry) for the 1st time in a century... with a 13.9% gain

errr...if thats the reasoning you are using you need to look at the massive swings lib dems have had in some council elections

Best scenario i can see - labour loses a few seat and maintains most of its base, tories still biggest party but lib dems make big gains

tories govern as a miniority for a bit, labour get a new leader, another gen election

labour win majority

What makes you think the British public would vote for common sense? We went for Brexit and Boris Johnson is storming ahead in the opinion polls. Whoever is Labour leader is going to be smashed by the media and if it's someone like Yvette Cooper they'll do so without populist policies to lure people in.

...politics is a game, the GE election will be a game. Those who analyse Labour policy and use it in debate will vote Labour anyway. I expect the Labour manifesto will win over some voters, I expect some will be persuaded by the hustings, but I fear Momentum Labour aren’t clever enough to beat the Conservative machine.

They aren’t clever enough to win the game like Blair won the game.

Thank God they aren't. The last thing this country needs is someone trying to buy Murdoch's loyalty again.

"Common sense", followed by a call for only the right sort of people to be let in.

You'd almost be forgiven for thinking that centrists weren't once in charge here, in the US and across Europe for years and bear a lot of responsibility for the mess we are in now.

Are you content with people dying as of a result of wholly economic circumstances?

Well I think the whole figure was largely discredited (and poorly reported by the press).

https://www.ippr.org/files/2019-06/public-health-and-prevention-june19.pdf#page=8 is the full report that they based their stories on, and it simply says that the trend of avoidable deaths had largely been falling between 1990-2012, but rose slightly between 2012-2017, thus causing the 130,000 extra avoidable deaths in that time. Nowhere does the report say this was as a result of austerity policies.

Indeed, the authors themselves suggest half of those deaths are linked to unhealthy behaviours such as smoking, alcohol, poor diet and low levels of exercise, all of which tends to result in obesity. It says that preventative services have been hit by austerity, and this doesn't help the situation, but nowhere does it say that reductions in spending caused 130,000 deaths, and certainly not a lack of food, shelter or other things that could be linked to extreme poverty.

Nope, the voting system needs to be changed to disable infiltration by groups such as Momentum.

They can join but shouldn't be given disproportionate power.

... which means not letting people in. Momentum have power that is in proportion to their numbers.

Only because of the membership rules, which I've just said needs changing back.

If Corbyn loses the next election, its because he and Momentum only represent a fraction of British society with their hard left views. Two lost elections in a row, a testament of failure.

The leadership should be determined by having the PLP votes weighed heavily against the membership, because they are democratically elected and therefore more representative of the majority.
