Current Affairs The Labour Party

The dominoes are falling, the house of cards is collapsing, and dark clouds are forming on the distant horizon. These and other useful metaphors are apt to describe the current situation. I did warn you all that the previous decade in British politics will look strong & stable compared to what is coming. I can't predict when exactly the world will turn upside down but it is headed our way. Neither can I predict which party or political movement will most benefit but I don't think it will be cuddly centrists.

The Nostradamus of GOT, you.

No growth; interest rates remain high; higher government borrowing = more cuts this year to public services. The welfare budget will be targeted as there's no way Reeves would get away with more taxes on businesses as the markets would crush her as sure as they crushed Truss...that's if she's still in post by the spring.

Should have borrowed and spent on investment in the green economy while they still could. They still have a way out if they were a progressive government: wealth tax on the richest 5%. Also, scrap any plans to increase the defence budget to 5% or even 6%.

Those two decisions require socialists to be pulling levers in Whitehall though - and this Starmer Gang are most definitely NOT socialists.

So you reckon something is going to happen, but you don't know what, or when it'll happen or who will be behind it?

Reeves has done a runner….

“ Rachel Reeves failed to address the Commons about the turmoil in UK financial markets after a surge in government borrowing costs and a plunge in the pound.

Shadow chancellor Mel Stride was granted an urgent question in Parliament on the upheaval that has raised questions about the sustainability of Britain’s public finances.

He said it was a “regret” that the Chancellor was “nowhere to be seen”.

The pound has plunged to its lowest level since 2023 after an intervention by Rachel Reeves on Wednesday failed to calm markets”…….

This is some statement. Let’s see where we are in 4 years time, maybe even 14.

So do you think Reeves and co are doing a good job……

No Pete, because like the 2010-2024 governments and their predecessors they’ve done nothing much yet to deal with the waste that exists in government spending, and they’ve been too timid in what they have done.

These lot have taken some baby steps - pushing ahead with rail reunification and buying back the defence housing estate being the two most obvious - but it needs to be more. Building a million new homes would help too, provided they keep hold of them.

When the IMF became involved in the UK financial crisis during the 1970's no-one could have predicted with any certainty that we'd get Thatcherism as a result and we'd get it before the 1970's were over. I think the populist right are now in as good a position as any to benefit electorally but the door is also open for the populist left to make a comeback. Timing this all to the precise year(or even to the next general election) is a mugs game though.

I dont know what you mean by populist left, but you're right to suggest that the ingredients are coming into place for a resurgence of left wing politics to thrive.

It's socialism or barbarism - that's always been the fundamental choice when you strip back the veneer of the liberal 'democratic' state.

The markets have turned on this government, which is ironic given how sychophantic they've been to them.

This risks turning into a full blown crisis with billions being spent on the cost of borrowing.

Rachel Reeves is taking a leaf out of her boss's book though by leaving the country; a trip to China with the begging bowl when meltdown is occurring here.

The markets will demand huge cuts to public spending...and the Starmer Gang will give them to them.

It's all going tits up now.
