Current Affairs The Labour Party

I don’t think it’s egocentric to be disappointed that the party you generally support move away from the reasons you supported them in the first place.

You think this Labour Party will try to change the narrative on immigration for example?
Labour isn't Bruce's party though...he's an Orange Book Lib Dem who advocates the type of policies that Starmer's neo-liberals are now promising to reinvigorate...so they're moving toward him, not away from him.

No, of course I don't, but I equally accept that relatively few people adopt my stance on open borders, so I don't expect any party to advocate for them, even though the evidence shows how beneficial they are. I seldom vote because the party getting my vote ticks every box for me and is a complete ideological match. Often they're a long way from that.
I think the issue for many is that there is a belief that Labour are supposed to be the party that protects and supports the most vulnerable and less well off.

When there is very little indication that this will be the case whilst people on the right are having every need catered for them, then think it’s understandable for people to get upset or look elsewhere.

No government, no matter what its composition, could undo the damage of the last 10 years in particular in a single term.

I disagree, a lot of it has is fixable relatively quickly, and for the bits that aren’t they could at least have started the process of fixing them.

They may have a big majority as of the end of next week and the world situation is likely going to be one that will justify quick decisions. It’s going to be as big of an opportunity as 1997 was, I just hope and pray they don’t waste it again.

I think it's pretty clear that there is no path to power for a truly centre-left party in the very right-wing England at the moment. I'm always amazed at the blindspot British media has when it comes to the far right. They keep pointing to France or Germany as having problems with the far right - but the reality is the far right is not in power in those countries and has been in power in the UK since 2016. This blind spot reflects the deeply right-wing conservatism that dominates English culture. It's why Starmer has done everything to present himself as almost as Tory as the Tories. I think that was understandable to get the keys to Downing Street. But it probably means he won't have a honeymoon as it becomes clear that all he can offer is a competent version of Toryism without the racism, xenophobia, or rule of law breaches. Which, given the menu on offer, is at least a start.

I sympathise with those who wish to see policies that are truly social democratic. I just don't think England really wants that - or would actually vote for it in a climate dominated by right-wing and far right media organs. Nobody will tell me the Daily Mail isn't far right.

However, while Starmer might think his current plan will work to get power in the UK, he'll find that Europeans won't be duped. He'll be treated like all intransigent British prime ministers with red lines that are incompatible with EU rules, rights, and obligations. The challenge for Labour will be to manage the "red wall" types who they will win back this time whilst becoming a reasonable partner for the EU once more. But if he thinks he can keep those lads on side whilst cherrypicking the benefits, he's sadly deluded.

Helping fund a foreign war while fixing the NHS without (allegedly) raising taxes will be some trick to pull off.

To do that you have to be in power though, which often requires that you appeal to people who aren't your base.

...and it was never a realistic possibility...much like Stamer's Tories getting more than 6 months to underline they're not Tories.
Dave you started on them 6 months before they got elected.

Im just saying, dont bother @ing me for at least the next 10 years, cos I dont wanna hear it, if its still goosed after 10 years, then you can say you told me so.

6months? To fix 14 years of destroying the country?

Nar, this will take at least 2 terms.

The first time will be spent trying to find some way to fixing the mess of the last fourteen years and steady the ship.

The next term after that, will be about implementing policies ( if at all possible )
