Read a few of the short stories from here, pretty good. DFW was definitely more at home writing short stories.
 

Just had my cataracts removed and I retired about 3 weeks ago,so looking forward to getting in my hammock in the garden and having a good read...in between watching sport on the humongous telly I treated myself to..lol.
Just finished Stalingrad by Anthony Beevor,which I bought about 2 years ago but had no time to read it...great book..
I like autobiography type books by sportsmen,in particular ,togger players...can anyone recommend a few...but NO redshite ones.....

American, his wikipedia describes his genre as hysterical realism, what ever that means!!

He struggled with depression his whole adult life and killed himself in 2008 aged 46. His most famous work is 'Infinite Jest' which is over a 1000 pages long and I confess to not getting half way through before giving up.

This collection is proving quite good though as all the stories have varying styles.

Go through this thread mate, there's a lot of cracking books been recommended, something for everyone , no matter what your tastes are.

Ps - I'd follow Stalingrad with Berlin, they run seamlessly together.

Berlin follows the Russians on their trail of utter vengeance after they broke out of Stalingrad and laid waste to parts of Germany, culminating in their capture of Berlin.

Not for the faint hearted !

One of my favourite writers, although I've not read oblivion. Capable of some truly spectacular sequences - like a Jimi Hendrix guitar solo or something, he could write mesmerising prose, albeit embedded in some weighty tomes. His last unfinished novel, The Pale King, is very hard work but worth it for some incredible passages.
