The GOT Book Club

Working through a couple of books I got for Christmas: The Game of Our Lives by David Goldblatt and Path Between the Seas by David McCullough. The former is about English football culture and the latter is about the creation of the Panama Canal. Enjoying both thus far.

The darkest of the dark. Makes Cormac McCarthy look like a children's author. You've got to read all four together mate, but you've also got to mentally ready to do it as the subject matter is so bleak. The TV adaptation with Sean Bean was pretty close to the books. Read the rest and let me know what you think. A lot of people can't do all four, that's all I'll say !.

The bleakness didn't put me off mate, I mean they are grim no doubt and I could see it would be a bit much for many, but it was the narrative, it just didn't grab me in the first two, but the third one I found really compelling. Will definitely complete the 4.

My brother says there are other books of the same fantasy universe she's created, which I will buy after this.
Took a bit of effort to get into it (mostly because it's information overload at first) but now am churning through it with gusto.

Been on my list for beards that.
 
Read through all of Bernard Cornwell's The Last Kingdom series of books.

I won't say they are the best historical fiction I have ever read, but what they might lack in character development they make up for with well-written battle scenes and a fast-moving plot. They do get a bit formulaic after a while as the main character is essentially just a tool for the author to provide the reader with a POV for some of the largest battles during The Great Viking Invasion of the 9th century. Gives a very interesting view of both sides of the conflict and the various leaders' motivations.

Forgot to mention the telly show is worth a watch as well!
 
Anyone interested in a good PI murder/crime series can do an awful lot worse than the Alphabet series by Sue Grafton
A is for Alibi, B is for Burglar etc
She's now at X
Set in the early 80s so no mobile phones etc
The PI is very likeable, Kinsey Millhone
Unchallenging, well written, enjoyable
