I had to read Blood Meridian and The Road both by Cormac McCarthy for my University course this year and this has made me want to read more of his stuff. He's a great writer IMO, has anyone read his other stuff?

There have been a few mentions of the Flashman Papers on here, this is the authors recollections of the war in Burma. Moving account that left me in tears.

2. Cochrane, The life and times of a fighting captain. Robert Harvey.

The man who inspired the adventures of Hornblower, Jack Aubrey, and the Ramage series.

3. Spreading my Wings. Diana Barnato Walker.

The story of a top pilot, from pre WW2 aircraft to breaking the sound barrier. Also a story of the contribution of a remarkable group of Women pilots of the second world war.

4. Das Boot. Lothar - Gunther Buchheim.

Written by a survivor of the U Boat fleet. Moving and realastic novel.

5. The Complete McAuslan. George MacDonald Fraser.

On a lighter side the complete collection of the worlds dirtiest soldier. Just plain funny.

From the vaults of Whitebootman Lodge, I hope you enjoy at least one of them.

First read Flashman on a plane in 1979. Instant fan. Felt sorry for the chap sitting next to me on the plane having to listen to me laughing all the way from London to LA.

Whitebootman, all the Flashman books are fantastic! I was also very moved by Quartered safe out here. I recommend you check out The Reavers if you haven't already. Another great novel by Fraser.

think Malcolm McDowell played him in a film once too, Royal Flash perhaps ?

I know mate, wasn't a very good portrayal, probably picked him on the back of his performance in Clockwork Orange as a sort of anti-hero if you like, didn't work though

They gave the film a slapstick feel and it just never worked. Also McDowell didn't feel right, he looked the part but never felt like Flashman. I still can't get my head round the fact that they chose Royal Flash, which for me is one of the weakest books (its still good though). Why not the first novel, Flashman? (which is my favourite). Iove them to have a go at doing the films now but I suppose they are far to politically incorrect to do now! Which is your fav book mate?
