The Everton Way?

There has been a serious lack of "world class" players at Everton. Even the 1980s side lacked players that you could seriously say were internationally world-class (or considered so by other club supporters).
In my life time I would say:
Nev
Kanchelskis
Lineker
At a push - Trevor Steven
Rooney Mk I for the short time he was here.

Its a bit of an embarassment, when you look at other Premier League sides such as Spurs who have always seem to have world class players to enjoy eg Bale, Ginola, Sheringham, Berbatov, Kane, Klinsman ect ect.

When the going is good, the Everton has always been greater than its sum of parts. Kendall (1980s version) did this, Joe Royle did this for a season, and Moyes did this (his squads were grossly underfunded in comparison to where they finished). If you think of the Everton way, I would say teamwork, hardwork and a splattering of real quality but no overpaid prima donnas.

We have taken a wrong turn with the new money are we not buying players or finding managers to fit our system.
I understand what you're saying and I kind of agree, but I think if the likes of Berbatov and Ginola are going down as world class we can probably sneak a few more in too.

agree with this point, had a conversation with my mates recently & I was saying for as much as we want good football Goodison reacts to a tackle, a cross for a good header etc. Any future manager should fit in to this & tap in to what makes Goodison tick. It is nothing more than a nice slogan now, school of science was great once upon a time. I think as a fanbase we would think the Everton way starts with hard work, desire first & foremost

Ginola was PFA player of the year. We have not had one since Lineker in 1986. Berbatov would have been our best striker since Lineker. Just my view, like.
Didnt mention Waddle or Hoddle or Gascoigne to be fair.

Yes, they're all good players. I wasn't suggesting otherwise. They're not players who would unanimously be viewed as world class though, on which basis it's a difficult comparison to make. You're talking more about flair players by the look of it.

The Everton way?

Nil Satis Nisi Optimum

Play for the badge on the front of the shirt & the fans will never forget the name on the back.

This lot are neither good enough nor willing to die out there (Idrissa Gana Gueye being a recent exception) & that's what you have to do to be a winning elite sportsman or team - self sacrifice.

There's no Peter Reid, Dave Watson or Tim Cahill in that team, not one. We can blame Silva all we want - yes, he's part of the problem but our recruitment has not been anywhere near good enough.

The Everton way is to be on average 8th-ish 9th-ish, or be either very, very, good or very, very poor.
Those are our 3 options.
Check the stats from 1900. 8th-ish 9th-ish.
atm, we're going through the very, very bad stage...soon be back to 8th-ish

I couldn't care less what the philosophy is, what our style of play is, if the manager 'gets the fans' or 'gets the club' it's all utterly meaningless. These phrases come out because a teams winning, and the opposition can't counteract that. That's down to good management and players.

The only way of playing is playing to win. If that means you play total football like Holland or just stick it into the channels like TNS, it really doesn't matter as long as you're winning.

I honestly couldn't care what football we play, if it means we win that's all I care about. If Big Sam was manager and we were winning every week but it was dour hoof ball, would I care? Not really, because we're winning.

I want a manager who adapts, I want winners and natural born killers.

It's a load of hyped up nonsense trying to promote us as 'the peoples club' where we do things jolly nicely. The 'Everton Way' I grew up with was with a ruthless owner who demanded and paid for success.

Ironically, John Moores ruthless approach was consistent with nil satis nisi optimum. Which, surely has a greater claim than school of science and certainly dogs of war, which was Joe Royle's way of making a virtue out of a necessity...

I take your point about 'World Class' players but they don't make a team in isolation. You need down to earth grafters with attitude and s will to win. You mention Spurs as an example but they haven't won anything despite huffing and puffing and coming close on the odd occasion whilst the Arse, even in the dying embers of Wenger's regime, pulled out several FA Cups and regular Euro Champions League appearances but were not particularly blessed with shed loads of so-called 'worldies'. It's up to the incumbent Manager/Coach to get the best out of players and to operate a workable and successful system/style, summat that we haven't had for it seems like ever apart from one or two brief spells. No consistency at any level in the club other than being mediocre and mundane in seemingly everything we do...other than EITC
