Acquiring for various reasons mega rich owners and therefore having considerable money to spend doesn't qualify as 'taking a punt',surely. If you mean that clubs such as Stoke, Newcastle, etc. have taken more of a punt than Everton,in the transfer market for example, its obvious that the 'punt' hasn't worked, just as Spurs spending has not really propelled them ahead of Everton. I'm not suggesting that it would not be nice to have tons of money to spend(and most on here mean 'on transfers') and we should never be happy with less than the best, but in a business sense prudence is not a bad thing. I know of course that many will disagree, and look forward to some balanced responses......

Maybe it has not turned out for them but at least they have been spending abit of cash and taking a punt on new signings. And if I may ask how many of the signings for those clubs were carrying injuries when signed.

I don't think its turned out for any club that has 'taken a punt' on a couple of £10 million players...the success has come to the clubs with mega millions or more. The playing staff at Everton contains quite a few very good players and maybe a couple of exceptional ones (who they are will depend on personal opinion), and we regularly have more relative success than these clubs. It is mega bucks that creates regular trophy winning success, and 'taking a punt on a few signings' 'at least' doesn't get a club anywhere. Just look at the league.

That can be the case Steve but I am pointing out at least they are doing something.

If Everton did the same 'something' and it failed who would take the blame? The 'something' that they are doing is not making them better than us is it ?
Do you think that if we had new owners who put in say £20 million a season it would get us closer to a regular top four place? Everyone is looking forward to the net spend or lack of net spend in the summer window....but you do not win trophies just by creating a big positive net spend. We have a better team than those below us simply because we have acquired or produced better players. Players come and go...its when they come and go that is important. The myth that 'net spend' is a measure of success is simply that, a myth, unless you have mega millions.

A measure of success is a couple of key purchases which energises the rest of the team. Exciting talent which provides that missing key to our craftbox.

We spend 20m on a diamond, or 2 x 10m on a couple of young artists, and we have a chance to improve. Pienaar and Osman are not incisive enough. Barkley and Mirallas not consistent enough. Del & Lukaku are loans. We depserately need creative attacking input if we want to define success by qualifying for the Champs League.

Nothing wrong with that , its a fair opinion. Personally I think you need more than that, and its not essential that a £20 million net spend is shown. Its the quality of the team and players that is the bottom line, not a figure in an accounts sheet? I would love Everton to spend £20 million on one or two players in the summer, but we would still take up our limit of loans, and get rid of a few fringe players. Thats how it should be managed...replacing natural wasteage with better. So many on here seem to measure our success not by results on the field, but by how much is spent.

But Steve look at how many fans criticised the lack of activity in January.

Having a balanced view doesn't progress things, unfortunately. The human race is just not that evolved yet, tribalism is still very much a thing. Who shouts the loudest (and appears most convincing) will win the next stage. At the moment Kenwright's spiel is still just about winning, but if he buggers up the summer it will finally wear thin, and the detractors will win. Who comes next is a game of luck...

I'm just interested why this summer but not all the others?

We've had record TV deals before. We've had sell to buy and make a profit before. We even went 3 seasons without buying a first team player.

Why this summer? Plus, we sold in Jan for real money and loaned.

I struggle to understand how any Evertonian could allow a chairman to lead the club into a situation where we sell a good player every transfer window or go under? That's the situation, no mistake.

The Martinez-effect.

New manager requires new funds to take the club to the next level. Standard.

Or should be. We shall see.

Moyes needed them. Time and time again. I'm no Moyes lover by any stretch but I'd be a bell to say there weren't times he was very close to making us a force. He was continually let down by his bezzie.

My lack of sympathy for Moyes is down to his shielding act and disdain for fans. I'm gutted for Everton FC
