The EU deal

Is it because that industry in slave labour driven then?
No, it's driven by the supermarkets who want prices at a minimum. To achieve this the industry pays the majority of the workers minimum wage or just above. Not many British people want this type of work and so the jobs go to immigrants.

And the tories'd have carte blanche to tear up worker's rights legislation that originated from our EU membership....

Whether EU laws are bad or good is irrelevant. The people need the power through the ballot box to change those laws.

Right now we cannot change EU law, neither can the UK Parliment.

You say this, but come on. How many unemployed and unskilled people in this country? You're telling me that they wouldn't bite your hand off at a chance for one of those jobs if they're weren't taken by unneeded, unskilled immigrants?

I agree with you.

Also;
Unlimited cheap migrant labour lowers wages which also makes some people not want to work in some of these jobs.

That's actually a falsehood. The reality is any rights in this country are being eroded by EU legislation as they impose a one size fits all across the board. The determination of zero hours contracts comes from the EU from where most industrial backstepping originates.

the legislation on contractual obligations comes from the EU. All EU legislation is done in double speak that is open to determination by national governments, all open ended to allow change without negotiation.

the minimum wage, much heralded allowed corporates to be 'legally compliant' without having to pay fair or living wages, that is being furthered by driving real wage terms downwards

edit, but this does play into the hands of those with a more vested corporate interest, such as the tories and new labour

Yes, that is the situation, unfortunately. It is very difficult to get many British applicants for that type of job. Also, the number of these jobs has increased dramatically in the past few years. Look at towns like Wisbech and Peterborough. They are moving towards having the majority of their populations being non-British. Both are heavily dependent upon food manufacturing.
