A few centuries ago, back when I lived down in the neck of the woods @RAFUH hails from, I went to Raleigh to lobby on this one. What I saw that day deeply traumatized me in ways I still struggle to explain. She might get it. The rest of you won't.

This is a name-and-shame thread. I have zero faith in politicians to deal with this problem. Been there, done that, got the merit badge. This is one we win in the court of public opinion. I loathe externalities. This one is right up at the top of the personal responsibility list.

Let's stay on these people.

I have a god-tier Huggy Bear story, with witnesses. I'm not interested in dealing with his attorneys, though, so I don't tell that one in public.

Do you have proper tests (I.e. blood alcohol tests) or do you still do that stupid "walk in a line and touch your nose" test?

Also, why have different state laws? That is bizarre. Laws should be consistently applied throughout the country.

I could defend the patchwork of state laws, but I won't. There are positives and negatives. There's a whole 'laboratory' argument that does have some merit.

If you want to talk about breathalyzers, summon an attorney in that area of law. That isn't me.

Liddy Dole got work done on this one. She tied federal transportation funding to underage drinking laws. This created other problems that I am all too intimately familiar with, and that might very well have led to me being in the state capitol on said day, but I have to respect her choosing to do something.

I did a work placement in Juvenile probation in Illinois a few years back. Anytime i went for a drink with ones from work they drunk as much as they liked and then drove home, were often joined by police officers, district attorneys etc who all did the same.

In fairness it was a smaller city and public transport was terrible and dangerous, private taxis were almost non existent. But with better infrastructure there i doubt peoples habits would have changed.

I had to rely on these people driving me home at the end of the night. I drew the line with one co worker who had countless pints of beer and offered me a lift home on their motorbike.

It's not amazing. Lad I went to college with died in a head on collision aged 17. He was sober. The other driver was pissed as a newt. Think he barely had a scratch on him, but obviously has to live with that death for the rest of his life. Not to mention the jail spell.

Not worth the risk.
