The Dreaded " YLOD "

My lads PS3 has , tonight, suffered the " Yellow Light of Death". I have taken it apart and I'm going to replace the thermal paste on the heat-sink plates ( or something ). There might be some technophobes on here who have tried this. If so , did it work ?

Thermal paste aint up to it, Arctic Silver 5 is one of the best. Use a razor to apply, and wash your hands first. Besides all that, clean the gunk off the fans and tell him not to storeand use it on the floor. Little bit of common.

In that case it defo wasn't Pro Evo that caused the yellow light mate. Probably some dust or something.

He's had it for 3 yrs . He's only moaning coz his new game is stuck in it.

The best thing to do mate, is to turn it off at the mains, open up the box and then put saw dust in it.

Leave overnight and it will get rid of the excess dust and moisture causing the problem.

In the morning empty the sawdust out and put the lid back on, it will be reet.

Sawdust may very well be the cure to cancer mate. It cures all ills.

I will back that claim up, Arctic Silver 5 is pretty much the best compound available. If you want to do a proper job, clean the chips and heatsinks with this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100010 first (I know that is a US based site, but for illustrative purposes).

I have to disagree on the application method though. Arctic Silver recommend you put a small strip along the length of the cores and then install the heatsink (do not spread it around). The compound is formulated to spread out itself as it heats up, and ensures even distribution of the paste in the area's it actually matters (the heat spreader is not a uniform temperature across it, it is hottest directly above the processor/graphics cores)
