Not a problem for world-class defenders who are early-to-mid-30's. Jags & Baines were never in that class, tho'...age takes away a little pace & focus, and that's deadly if you don't have high-end attributes elsewhere to compensate.

Wish that was the case, but he's looked awful for pretty much every minute he's been on the pitch as an Everton player.

We have money to spend on defenders. We've signed Digne, who will be first choice.
I think we need two new CBs. I think we can get away with one, for now, with Holgate coming in if Silva insists on playing a high line.
He can't play in a high line.
There does have to be some perspective in this for me. Not because I want to play down the problem, but because we need to treat it with the severity it's due, and over the top statements don't do that.
Holgate, Keane and Jagielka are all just about PL centre backs. While Jagielka was a leading PL CB he has declined over time. Keane had looked very good for Burnley and Holgate was improving nicely. They are far from the level of CB's we want, but would be in and around many PL squads outside the top 6 albeit towards the bottom end of the league. Ideally we would replace all 3 but it's too big an ask.
What we cannot do is have these 3 as our choices. Holgate is currently injured and Jagielka cannot play more than 1 game a week, and a prolonged run of starting each week will at best see his form dip and at worst see him pick up an injury. In that context we would have the worst cb partnership in the league. We are an injury to Holgate or Keane away from that.
If we can get 1 in we are at the point where I think we are vaguely competitive with most of the sides in the league in terms of centre backs. We don't have to play Jagielka every week and he can be rested so when he comes in performs to a decent level (as he did at the back end of the season). It will also mean Holgate isn't hung out to dry.
If we fail to do that, for me (when you consider the ages of Holgate and Jagiela as opposed to their ability) we have the weakest cb options in the league, by a reasonable difference, in what is a key area especially for a side who may get sucked into a dogfight. If you cannot prevent goals you are in big trouble.
If we get 2 good CB's in, then we can start to think about being towards the upper end of the 14 teams outside the top 6. That would be great (especially if one was Mina) but what is essential is we get one in. None of our 3 are ideal but with the right partner all 3 could do a job that should see us competitive and steering away from the relegation zone. If we fail to do that though, we will be in a dogfight.
