I first started hearing it in the late sixties when I was among a group of apprentice lads at college for 12 months. If someone finished a task, as a group we judged it either as an ace piece of work, or "cat" if it didn't come up to expectations. I've used it ever since and my immediate circle of work colleagues and friends know what it means and utter it also. I'm thinking it's a Merseyside thing.
I thought catastrophic but it's probably local, as you say.

Ramsey subbed Bobby Charlton at 2-0 and Beckenbauer - released from his Charlton marking role - just bossed the game from then on.
thought one of the goals was a soft one that he dived too late and it went under his body. became known as a 'bonetti' when it happened in our Sunday league games.

The hazards of being a goalie. We all remember the mistakes.
I know - hugely successful career with Chelsea and England, and yet we all remember 1970. Watched the game with my Dad and Brother-in-law on holiday in Towyn in Wales. Caravan park with a social club. Of course back then there were no big screen TV's so there were about 200 people gathered around a 24 inch set up on a wall bracket. It still amazed me that we were watching something happen live, in colour from Mexico. I was 10 so only got to drink shandy - remarkable too!

Can see Mullers header in slow motion looping over Bonetti.
* edit - watched again - could've sworn this was a headed goal - it was a looping header back across goal and Muller volleyed it in.

Uwe Zeller got the header for #2. Like it skinned off the back of his head and over Bonetti

Yes, I agree. Have seen it loads of times and each time you can see him 'quit' just as he hits the ball. Real shame, would have liked to have seen him win it.
It was horrible, it must have had 6” of break on an 18” putt, he tried to guide it in almost.
