That is very sad. I particularly liked when he did little segments on other sports. A true wordsmith. RIP.

Eddie Butler was a modern era commentator in that his urbane style of talk filled in the increasingly long periods of inaction on the field while refs became the centre of attention.
It seemed to me McLaren got more excitement to describe in former days when they tended to get on with the game.
