Sad to hear the Paul Mariner news on the eve of England's rapture.

He was a somewhat underrated player, though I thought him terrific. He was a strong target man with a good touch and a nose for goal. He was an asset to one of the greatest club teams I ever saw, Bobby Robson's Ipswich Town. I can still name them all. A wonderful side. Mariner will be best remembered for two crucial England goals: the winner against Hungary that took England to Espana '82, and the clincher when there against France.

A fine player.
