I wondered during the BBC Masters highlights who that rasping voice was, then realised it was Alliss, he sounded awful, so presumably was nearing the end.

He was broadcasting from home, and his family said his death was unexpected.

He had such a knowledgeable, comforting voice, a sad loss to golf and a massive void to fill for the BBC major tournament coverage.

Peter Alliss' death cuts another huge link with the past. I liked the way he always gave a mention to local golf clubs on air in quiet moments of play. Brian Johnston did that too and it reminded you that apart from the elite superstars there are millions of folk playing the sport every day just for the sheer enjoyment of it.

He did at times take advantage of his position to air his personal opinions but what the heck.

Had some very odd views on women’s golf. Like you say was iconic voice of the sport but let’s not pretend he wasn’t stuck in the 50s.

...i always enjoyed listening to Peter Alliss and remember fondly the TV series ‘A Round with Alliss’. Sad to hear of his passing.
