The cost of your hero today

Sir Timothy of Cahill I believe was 1.7 million pounds. If he were in his prime today he'd easily be a 30-50 million pound player. Somehow I still feel he'd be overlooked by the truly big teams, even though he was regularly scoring against them and smashing in volleys in World Cups, etc.

Kanchelskis would be close to nine figures in his prime. Lukaku was 28 million, sold for 80 million to United, but if in his prime today would very easily surpass the 120 million Isak was sold for - much better striker.

Arteta 4 million-ish, easily a 30-50 million pound player today.

Peter Reid. Priceless...but wouldn't be on the pitch long enough with today's namby pamby officialdom. What he got away with in the 80's would probably earn him a lifetime ban nowadays but, by God, was he a midfield enforcer. Kick one of our playmakers and you just knew Reidy was going to serve up swift retribution.

But, then again, we had a few like him back in that team of all teams. We didn't get bossed or rolled over in those days, by anyone.

Big Bob…£350,000 circa 1973..

English record transfer at the time.

Don’t know what that would equate to today but as someone else said, the normal rules of inflation cannot be applied to football.
I think that price included the value of Howard Kendall and Arthur Styles who went to Birmingham as part of the deal and maybe their value was over estimated to make it £350,000.

Yeah, I could swear he had broken his leg twice as well before we signed him and he would still go in full blooded. Some player.

Duncan Ferguson broke the UK transfer record when he moved from Dundee Utd to Rangers, which means he would be worth more than £125 Million now

He certainly had a very bad injury, was it against us on a snow bound pitch at Burnden Park? His transfer rated fee before the injury was around £500,000 or more, after the injury we got him for around the same price as we paid for Seamus Colman!Peter wasn’t the quickest of players but as Dave Sexton, who managed the England U21’s or U23’s, said “ The first two yards were in Peter’s head, he was always seconds in front of most players because he could read and anticipate the game very well”.
