There's an important distinction between being learned (clever) and intelligence (thinking skills, problem solving, making links). Of course, cleverness can empower intelligence, and intelligence can drive cleverness, but they don't always go hand in hand. I know some very clever but utterly stupid people, and some very intelligent people who have not had a good education.
