The changing of the guard...

If any of those experienced players on the bench were a left back or a right back they'd have started the game. Nice to have young players but 2 of the 7 are filling in due to an injury crisis with our defence.

The amazing thing is - with Baines, Garbutt, Oviedo, Hibbert, Coleman injured - when you see how Galloway and now Browning have filled in, I don't see any crisis

Jim Arnold! Would have taken me a few years of guessing before got that.
If it was after that derby then Stevens was a definite at right back. Don't think Brian borrows ever recovered
I was pretty sure King was missing from that match so I couldn't resist looking at the match on Youtube.

Arnold
Stevens
Bailey
Ratcliffe
Higgins
McMahon
Richardson
Sheedy
Irvine
Heath
Sharp

That's pretty decent side. Would have been interesting to see what would have happened if mcmahon stayed. I was gutted when he left but maybe Reid would never have played.
Easy to forget Richardson too but he could look class at times

Dragging it back on topic interesting to look through some of the kids there and wondered if there are qualities missing now. No one as snidey as Ratcliffe could be. Sharps subtlety maybe missing. Sheedy a one off so won't go down that road.
On plus side we never really brought a defender through with the composure of stones or Galloway. Not one that could defend anyway

Higgins was pretty calm under pressure I thought and decent on the ball although I think Stones will be miles better. Was gutted for him that he missed out on some glory.

The interesting and "exciting" thing is that with Mori and Holgate still to come through as well as Kenny etc we look to have a really strong defence -- not something which has been associated with Martinez.

The Barry role will hopefully be filled by Besic and then we simply need to find a playmaker, winger and a forward to have a very rounded attack.

One key position is still keeper...i hope Martinez has someone in mind for next summer.

Yes....let's have a go without googling :)

Neville in goal, I think.

John Bailey, Mark Higgins, Kevin Ratcliffe, and probably John Barton.

Irvine, Peter Reid, Andy King (I am guessing) and I do believe Terry Curran played on the left wing.

Up front Adrian Heath and Sharpie.

I am open to correction from those with better memories than mine :)

Sounds about right to me Khal. I was in the Scoreboard end that day and coming out, met a load of mates who were Manu fans and on the way home, I lived in Salford then, they all said we looked a team to be reckoned with.

24? Thought he was nearer thirty, must have come into the side at young age. Very sad then. Mountfield brought something to the team but can't help thinking Higgins would have brought more. Who knows though.
I do not think he would ever have had Mountfield's goals but remember him as a stylish player who was unlucky with the timing of that injury. Mountfield'and Ratcliffe a great pair though. Greater than the sum of the parts!!

Yeah all about balance. I was pretty young and remember being totally narked about psycho pat replacing bailey. Can't argue with it in hindsight I suppose. Gave Sheedy a lot of freedom
