The biggest clubs in England now and 10 years ago

Indeed.

The whole RS legend is based around a glittering era of dominance between 1976 and 1984 when they swept all before them.

Their biggest rivals in that period were Ipswich Town and Forest :(

The traditional powerhouses of Everton, Arsenal and United were all in the doldrums for most of that time.

By 1985 they had all started getting competitive again and one by one Everton, Arsenal and then United started winning the title again and the RS stranglehold was broken.

But they live in a time warp, unable to accept that 1990 was a last hurrah at the summit ;)

I’d honestly have to argue that United’s initial dominance saw them face less competition than the RS in the 80’s. There was a real lack of opposition in the early 90’s and in conjunction with their ability to capitalise on the formation of the premier league and keep their club modern (light years ahead with their stadium and off the field investment) they had great success, unlike us and the RS who totally floundered and we’re stuck in the previous decade.

Look at some of the tables in the premier league in the early 90’s and see who was up there (Mike Walker’s Norwich anybody)- English football was god awful until in fairness to them both Wenger and then Ferguson turned it around in the mid to late 90’s and modernised the game. Fair play to Whiskey nose as well for seeing off Chelsea and City to keep winning as well in the 2000’s, but my god I wish we’d been better prepared for the premier league.

It is criminal the way this club was left behind as the Sky revolution took hold.

Just criminal.

My son's first match was a 2-1 victory over Man Utd at Goodison in May of 1989. Sharpie got a brace.

Back then we had more league titles than Arsenal AND Man Utd. We also had more FA Cups than the RS back, too. We were a real giant of English football. Not anymore.

In the last 30 years this once great club has been very much left behind, both on and off the pitch.

I still have faith that Mosh can re-establish us as one of this country's elite clubs, particularly if the stadium plans come to fruition.

Villa are a bigger club than Newcastle

Having big attendances because you practically give away tickets doesn’t make you a massive club

True. The city of Newcastle is a one-club-city, too. Half a million Geordies have just one club to support.

In contrast, Aston Villa have to compete for support with a club from the same division as them, while we have a really big club (the RS) on our doorstep.
