I'm not party to exactly when that happened, I'd guess it was the big 4 prior to City being taken over as they wouldn't have been in the conversation before that. It's the 6 biggest clubs in the league, its really not any deeper than that.

It's always very useful on a forum when one of your teams supporters has such an inside knowledge of your rivals.

It's basically the 6 Clubs that make the most money. Having the most money means typically they finish top 6, but if this year finishes how it seems it will they'll have only actually done that in half the seasons since they coined the term.

Basically it's the Big (insert number here based on the positioning of Sky favoured clubs) and can fluctuate to their choosing.

It has always fluctuated.

In the 70s and 80s it was always a big 5.

Spurs, Woolwich, Everton, Liverpool and Man U.

That only really changed when CFC and MCFC won the lottery.

PL titles alone shouldn't denote a position in the Big Six. You wouldn't take United out for Leicester would you? Arsenal have won FA Cups recently, Spurs League Cup and CL final.

For example, Arsenal versus the mancs, if it was this weekend, would have been a poor 9th placed team playing an even poorer 11th placed team.
But those wonderful people at Sky would've still billed it as a MASSIVE game!
Perhaps it'll be 'The Big Seven' next season when Carlo really starts to make his mark. Or are we not cool enough to be part of their elite little band?

Why did it change from the Big 4 to Big 6?

Possibly due to the fact they perpetuated the myth of the top four becoming invincible Utd, RS, City Chelsea I suppose, and they wanted it to become more inclusive so they unilaterally invited another two clubs into the clique.
