The Big Six (A Total Myth)

Didn't it start off as the big 2? Utd and Arsenal, then Chelsea came into the mix and of course City? Anyway its a load of nonsense purely biggng up their viewings, importance, pretending the league is ultra competitive! Atm it could be considered a big 2 again with rs and city

It's not good for us and not good for football in a wide context.

This represents a cartel and the elite clubs, even doing a Leicester wouldn't catapult us into this group.

It must mean being shut out of meetings and in general, it just means we are also-rans.

Tottenham always had the London advantage and a friendly media even when they were crap and nowhere near being considered part of this group of clubs, but they have taken advantage of their relative success in several ways, not least with the new stadium, and you get the feeling now that they are going to be self-sustaining in the top six, along with the others. They can bob and weave a bit, and have a bad season every now and then, but the underlying financial and structural advantages they have then come back to the fore.

That's the challenge for us, not only to get in amongst these clubs, but to find a way to stay there. The stadium will be critical not so much for what it can do for us in financial terms, though it will help, but in terms of perception it will be vital.

This 100%

Sky have just quoted a statistic about the geordies versus 'The Big Six'.
Presumably, Leicester and Sheffield United are part of this elite group now since the mancs can't string two wins together and Arsenal are currently a very flattering 11th place.
Or do you retain your status as one of the big six no matter how dire you are?
Just a thought.

It was the “Top Six” for the last couple seasons when those clubs actually did fill the top six for about two seasons in a row.

Now that they aren’t it has become the “Big Six”.

To be fair to Sky though this nonsense pre-dates them.

In the 80s five clubs, including EFC, were labelled the “Big Five” and it was their threatening a breakaway league which lead to the formation of the EPL.

Just for clarification;
Big 6, Big 4, Top 6, Top 3. Palace have never been in any of them. (Except in 1991 when we finished third, but then everyone referred to "The Big 2" for the following season.
Our "expectations" are summed up in the (only semi) ironic chant;
"When Geoff,
Steps up,
To lift the FA Cup,
We'll be dead, we'll be dead."

Somehow better to have no expectations I always think.

Remember it well.
Us, the RS, MU, Spuds and Arsenal.

Think we dropped out first!

I wonder if breaking FFP rules in all manner of ways over a number of years will affect City's status in the Sky Six.
They'll struggle to include them when they get relegated to League Two and are stripped of their titles.
Given that the other mancs are a couple of seasons away from being any good, are we back to 'The Big Four' again?

I actually think Sky want us there.

The Original Top 4, was Liverpool, United, Arsenal and Chelsea.
Then had the audacity to have "big 5" and include City, then Spurs, top 6.

Obviously we're not anywhere near, but could you imagine! Sky's "big 7" Derby Weekend

Everton Liverpool
United City
Arsenal Tottenham

They'd be cleaning the excitement from Sky HQ for years!

I don't really understand why people get so weird about this.

They call it the big 6 because some combination of those 6 teams makes up the top 4 (which is what matters now) pretty much every season. Since we gatecrashed it 15 years ago there has only been one season where the top 4 wasn't made entirely from these 6 teams. It's not always the same 4, but it's always 4 of the 6, so they call them a big 6. It makes perfect sense.

If we start winning trophies and finishing in the top 4, we'll be part of the conversation, just like City and Spurs were adopted. There's no conspiracy. Unfortunately while we're floundering around in mid table and haven't won a trophy for 25 years, nobody really cares about us. Only the club themselves can change that, let's see if they do.
