Everton always do the right thing in the build up to a game. We, like every team play songs and show video montages and then fade to the opening drum rolls of Z-Cars.
But, when we parade former team players or notable guests, it's always at half time when everyone's either in the toilet or queuing to buy a pie and a pint!!
I'd heard the rumour of Duncan coming on and feared he'd be on at half time and be missed by two thirds of the crowd. But they did it spot on this time..not twenty minutes before kick off, not fifteen minutes before. Seven minutes before kick off and the music faded out and The Big Man Returneth..it was one of the most charismatic moments I've ever witnessed at Goodison Park in my twenty five years going there. You could see he was very emotional and looked like he could even pull on a Royal Blue shirt there and then - The man is just not an icon but he's a talisman, even now to the young crop of players.
Duncan is our Keyser Söze.He's a myth, a legend..The Greatest trick Duncan ever played was convincing other teams he didn't exist!
It was like throwing a spark into a Fireworks factory..It all went off and the crowd sang their hearts out and that feeling must of echoed around both dressing rooms !
I don't know what happened at half time..I'd like to THINK I know.. I'd like to believe the big man was in there..but what ever was said, what was ever needed - It certainly did the job,s so much so, our passions ran long after the final whistle blew !
It's just a shame the only real H(e)art in the Manchester City team that day was in their goal..
