The Ashes 2025

Forlorn men of the England ashes team. What are we thinking.

1. Crawley - showed he can get runs last time out after being under huge pressure.
2. Duckett - Got a great ball and a grubber, still a fine player.
3. Bethall - Fresh energy needed and Bethall looked better at 3 in NZ (very good infact) than he did at 6 in England
4. Root - ATG
5. Brook - England need him to deliver, no one has more ability but he needs to show it.
6. Stokes - Still fighting hard.
7. Smith - Another who no sensible judge would doubt the ability of, another who needs to deliver on that ability.
8. Atkinson - Hasn't been great in new conditions, finally got a few wickets and hopefully kicks on.
9. Archer - Think him being singled out is pretty harsh, was the only one threatening in the first innings and was let down ny really poor catching and not being backed at the other end. Did let his head get down towards the end, but came back hard.
10. Tongue - I like Tongue but if the conditions suit Potts go Potts.
11. Bashir - Harsh on Jacks, but England need a full time bowler to share the load.

That I've already got myself up for this game despite all the evidence pointing to certain disappointment should be studied by academics.

I dont think Bashir is significantly better with the ball than Jacks so I would stick with him for another game. The batting is fragile and needs a capable no.8.

Duckett is similar to Pope for me. Both massively cashed in against Ireland and Zimbabwe, which puffed up their averages considerably. Duckett needs to get runs. It's hard to see how Bethall is the next batsman really as he's done absolutely nothing to deserve it. It's a grim state of affairs that he's the only option out there. We really need the likes of Brook and Smith to bat properly and not finding ways to get themselves out.

Congratulations to you guys having the enthusiasm to talk about the remainder of this series in the face of the most pathetic, braindead preparation and cricket that I've seen in a long time.

This lot aren't worth the effort and the series is a foregone conclusion.

The really sad thing is that this is the best group of players that we have and they are not without talent .

They are either terribly led by McCollum or believe their own hype or both.

One thing is clear they aren't prepared to put in the hard yards that are required to beat or even compete against top class opponents.

This is the most unlikeable team I can think of ( apart from the RS).

England will get a draw in Adelaide and the Aussies won't be too upset as they don't want to their show piece of the year

The Boxing Day Test to be a dead rubber

Not having scoring hundreds against lower teams as a criticism. Duckett has scored decently against everyone.

He averages 29 against Australia and just 37 when you take those two innings out. So no, he hasn't scored decently against everyone. People talk about him as if he's the next Sehwag or something.
Since he came back into the side in 2022 he's averaged over 44, still over 40 if you inexplicably remove some of his scores, which is always a hiding to nothing. His only previous series against Australia was OK, not laughably bad or anything. He had a really good game at Lord's. Yet after two poor showings you want to say he's like Pope. Not true.

Sehwag averaged 29 against England, by the way.

People have been calling him the best opener in the world. That puts him in the same bracket as the Sehwags, Haydens, Smiths and Cooks of old. Give me a break.

I think you're very much a glass half full supporter of your side and have been for a long time now, I hope they pull off a change in form. I think there's massive technical issues with most of the batters and the bowlers are struggling to be consistent. Here's hoping it changes.

Alas Bashir got 0-115 off 25 overs for Lions v Australia A last weekend, I don't think he's the answer.

Asa Tribe, on the other hand, got 129* but no-one is talking about him cos he's County Championship Division 2, albeit he got about 1000 runs in ten innings across August and September. Bethell still doesn't have a first class century and looked scratchy albeit for 71 in the same Lions game.

Anyway, we've seen this movie before, England are toast and I can't see a way they avoid 0-5 as draws almost never happen these days. The only question is can they lose 0-5 in under 15 days of cricket! 🤣
