The Ashes 2025

Other nations players banned for less please?
  • Cameron Bancroft: Received a 9-month ban from CA for his role in the 2018 incident, which is shorter than Smith's 12-month ban. The ICC only fined him 75% of his match fee and gave him three demerit points.
  • Faf du Plessis: As South Africa captain, he was found guilty of using a mint to shine the ball in 2016. He was fined 100% of his match fee but avoided a ban. He had also been fined 50% of his match fee for a similar offence in 2013.
  • Vernon Philander: In 2014, the South African bowler was fined 75% of his match fee for "scratching the ball with his fingers and thumb".
  • Duanne Olivier: In 2017, the South African was fined 100% of his match fee for "deliberately and inappropriately" applying saliva to the ball.
  • Sachin Tendulkar: The Indian batting legend was fined 75% of his match fee and given a one-match suspension by the match referee for "interfering with the seam of the ball" in a 2001 Test against South Africa, a charge that was highly controversial at the time.
  • Michael Atherton: In 1994, the England captain was fined £2,000 (a fraction of a match fee at the time) for rubbing soil on the ball to dry his hands. The incident led to much controversy but no suspension.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but I'm a lover of cricket and the standards that are supposed to be upheld. The absolute shambles that was sandpapergate was a stain on the game, and the crocodile tears from Warner and Smith should have added time to the suspension.
Nah fair enough, I'm sure I've said it on here before (maybe not) but it was pretty common knowledge that ball tampering was rife. These idiots just got caught in the stupidest way possible and since we are hated so much it was just the invitation needed for open slather.
