And the current set up of English cricket doesn’t encourage kids to become proper openers who have good technique, who can bat for hours and who understand that their main job is to take the shine off the ball, wear out the bowlers and, as required by the state of the game, just occupy the crease.

Speaking as an old fast bowler there is nothing more demoralising than a ‘blocker’. Batsmen waving a horizontal bat around gives you hope and an extra 3-5mph
 

One day cricket especially Twenty20 had killed technique.

Don't get me wrong 20/20 is fun to watch but I can't see test cricket being played in 10 years time.

Given the teams lack of Cricket, the powers that be maybe saw this test as a loosener, a fitness builder, and expected loss, and kept Anderson and abroad for Adelaide...but no h kkf the poor batting technique will still be there...not thst the Aussies are any great shakes, they can collapse with the best of them

Our side was doing it too a few years back, they were obsessed with rotation for bowlers who may get injured and "managing workloads" to the point where the quicks only seemed to be allowed to bowl about 3 overs in a row. From memory it was the brain wave of this rugby union boffin Pat Howard who'd weaselled his way into some top job in cricket australia.

Thankfully they seem to have banished the idea as starc, hazlewood and cummins play every game now.

Australia and India seem to have plenty of players who do more than blocking the ball. Warner, Rahul, Smith, Kohli score runs at a good pace.
 
Fail to prepare and prepare to fail. The lack of preparation before this test gave us no chance to compete. Allied to a very strange team selection. I can’t believe we don’t have one decent back up spinner to Rashid. Leach offers nothing. I would have been tempted to take Livingstone, yes I know he’s favoured form of the game is one day cricket, but he offers off and leg spin and can’t possibly offer as little threat as leach and certainly offers more with the bat. The decision not to play broad was baffling. He relishes bowling against left handers and now due to the farcical itinerary, we have the really chance of broad and Anderson playing in the second test with virtually no competitive cricket since last summer.
