In fairness I haven't heard too many of his songs, but the ones I have heard have been a bit bland.

Not too bad, but it's a bit 'meh' for me.
I prefer hip hop from the late 80's and early 90's when it was funky, and was made by some black guys with a bad attitude problem. ?
