TBF your second post is what makes the first post sound a lot like its yet another example of gesture politics from Trudeau. This is not a measure that is going to have any significant positive real-world effect, nor is it dealing with a significant problem, nor is it even clear whether it would be effective (since possession is still allowed and there is always the huge market in the US a short distance away).

You could even argue from the incident that set this off (the Nova Scotia attacks) that this might make things less safe by removing means by which people could defend themselves prior to the arrival of police.
