You guys would know more than us, but is there anything you or Americans in general think would spark changes?

Would it take a particular set of people or incident for Republicans to stop and think we need to do something?

I know its a bit of a stupid question but most of us here struggle to get our head around the culture of guns and the obsession

Personally gave up hope for change after Sandy Hook.

Do you think if there were a spate of mass shootings in rich, predominantly white Republican areas, it would spark even a small shift? Probably me being very naive!!

No.
Insider reports that a new poll by CBS News and YouGov shows that 44% of Republicans believe mass shootings are “something we have to accept as part of a free society.”

Decades of poor education in general and in social studies and true history in particular means we have an incredibly ignorant elective unable to think critically or for themselves. Add in the righteousness of evangelicals and we're pretty screwed.

*looks longingly at @Boss_Blue 's shed.

I don’t think so. Just like RAFUH, Sandy Hook felt like the time when it really sank in to me that no change was possible in this country. If we would collectively look away from 20 rich, white, five year olds being killed, there just isn’t any hope.

I’ve never personally met anyone callous enough to actually say it out loud, but their (in)actions clearly say that they view these kinds of massacres as necessary sacrifices on the Altar of Freedom. I mean, sometimes even one of their own kids being killed doesn’t wake them up. There is at least one parent who lost their kid at Parkland who I seem to remember openly campaigning for increased gun rights.

I don't think he has any national prominence, but maybe a non-Carolinian will tell me otherwise.
Certainly has experience working with a whackadoo legislative branch.
I am fairly clued in on US politics, live in a bordering state and still had to look up who he was. Not saying he couldn’t do a good job, but I don’t think he’s got much name recognition on the national stage.

Yeah you might be right. Ive seen him on a couple prospective lists though and looking at said list he seems like he might be in line with what more moderate voters want while also bringing a swing state to the table. If not him, then we’re back to what? Booker and Warren as possible options? Harris is not the answer, and Biden should not even be entertaining another run even though he says he will. Maybe a current unknown is the best option after all.

It's just such a difficult situation the Democratic Party finds themselves in. The coalition they need to assemble in order to win a national election is so broad that it's almost impossible to find a candidate that all the necessary voters can tolerate, yet losing even one of their factions probably means they lose the election. That's problematic when you're trying to appeal to a political spectrum of voters that spans everyone from full-blown communists to people who are an eyelash to the left of outright fascism.

I disagree, though that is certainly what they think. Decades of positioning, internal polling and all the rest have blinded them to reality - that if they get a decent candidate with a decent policy programme, one that isn't beholden to donors and which ordinary people can see will improve their and their families positions (or at worst won't actively screw them over and then get paid millions to open their mouths at Goldmans / Netflix) they are much more likely to win.

Such a candidate would absolutely mash Trump in 2024, but they'll never find one because of the risk to their own position.
