What's all the fuss? He's 18 now but is going to end up not being all that. Can see him scoring some goals for a crap team in Belgium or Holland and earning a move to someone like Sunderland before being found out.

You'll get all the Americans wanting him for us too lol.

I personally think Altidore's the only one right now in the U.S. pool who can blossom into a bona fide star. Freddy Adu's got some physical limitations, and Landon Donovan doesn't appear to be willing to test what the limits of his potential is in Europe.

I think he's possibly coming to terms with the fact that his physique is not going to give him any advantages as it did whe he was 13-16. From the little I've seen he does have the ability to be a star though

Jozy Altidore cool name anyway. I watched Juan Pablo Angel lift the New York Red Bulls over Chivas last night and Altidore's commentary sounded like he was a stand up guy. The truth is and not to hurt many Colonial Evertonians i had the feeling Altidore has been my pick all along to succeed. He just has that ability that with the right toolage could be a superstar for the US.

Adu has the tools but will he get the chance? He demonstrated his abilities in the Spain match and certainly still has some more upside regarding his age.

Donovan tried it in Germany and it didn't work out. He's getting well paid in MLS ($900,000 per year) so I don't see him trying another European adventure.

We'll see about Altidore. I hope he makes it not just for himself but also for the US National Team as well.

It's damning that writers are already eulogizing Gerrard, calling him one of the great one-club men in history, when he's slated to play for MLS's best team this summer. It's damning that 33-year-old midfielder Gareth Barry revealed in an interview that "America was an option, and there was a conversation about it but when I spoke to the coaches here they said, 'If you are going there, you are retiring.'" It's damning when German legend Philipp Lahm mentions the American top flight in the same breath as a Qatari league famous for little more than overpaying players past their prime. And in its way, it's just as damning that Altidore, a proven failure in Europe, is not only coming on home to one of MLS's favored teams, but doing so in the expectation that he'll prove to be a difference-maker.

So maybe it's best if Altidore fails here, too, just as he has nearly everywhere else, and in so doing at least proves that MLS is tough enough to stifle him. After all, a league that only exists as a last refuge for old men and as a place where young washouts can play at being something else isn't much of a league at all.
