Temper Expectations

The last few seasons I remember being overly optimistic, things have gone horribly wrong.

So I'll remain cautiously optimistic for the time being.
I remember that feeling during the old David Moyes feast and famine seasons early in his tenure. There's no real reason to presume Martinez will have the same sort of alternate-season wobble.

I'm still a bit worried about squad depth but eff it. It's pre season. People should be positive and excited about the new season.

Four goals:

League Cup
FA Cup
Europa League Championship
Top 4 finish

None of the four are "likely" but any of the four are reasonable. Get any one and it's a good season. Get any two and it's legendary.

The most important thing long-term is getting to Europe each and every year. I want to be in a position to do damage when we finally get to the CL --- and we will with Roberto.

It's been a good week and by all accounts it's not over the adding to the squad.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves though.

I feel a new era approaching but let's not get carried away. I worry some are expecting miracles, I think we are looking at 2/3 seasons for RMs plans to fall into place.

That's not to say we are going to drop down any places, on the contrary but you know how it is, tough to get any higher but we are making inroads I feel.

Everton are we not COYB!!
I think you got it just right. For me this week was all about building a credible threat for upcoming seasons . The signing of Rom is a massive statement that the club is buying into Berto's ethos . As to expectations , I am so happy with what is happening in terms of the big picture that I am strangely calm about it all. We have one of the best managers in the game , a squad that just loves this guy & willing to push themselves to meet his standards , that will do me . 7TH 6TH 5TH 4TH no idea what I do know is I am as proud as can be of Everton and the way we play and that attitude he refers to in every interview .

Without being a buzz killington I kinda concur. Really though it's hard to judge this early in the transfer window. I don't think the RS look any better, spurs also, Man U haven't improved dramatically (yet), Chelsea look strong, nailed on top two, arsenal hard to tell, still look like they need some steel. The weird one is city, if they've nearly done their business I'm not impressed, thought they might have freshened up their attack. Reckon for us it hinges on how we deal with Europa and luck with injuries. It's important we qualify for Europa as a minimum two seasons running for momentum. Preferably by winning some damn silverware, and good run in Europe even if that means say a 7th place finish.

I love that we are as good as we were last season, only swapping Deulofeu for Besic so far... Difference being the main elevating influence beyond Martinez's quality last season were the loans.
There is nothing stopping us from doing the same this season... But take last seasons squad and then add a Lukaku, Barry and Deulofeu level of quality on loan to it again, and we've got a chance of doing something really immense.
We'd be lucky to get that quality of loan again, but then we would of been lucky to get it last season and we did.

come on mate were Evertonians. We are too experianced in dissapointment to get ahead with ourselves.

As long as you can manage those expectations, go ahead and set the bar as high as you please. I don’t know what good that does because it won’t impact in any way what will happen, but if that’s what you need to enjoy the season, go for it. I prefer to wait and watch. For me, expectations create anxiety, and I don’t want it.

I know exactly what you're getting at @Blue Cheese , been saying the same the last couple of days on here.

We could do very, very well, but I won't be getting angry if we don't. I'm going to sit back and enjoy the boss togga we play now, and whatever happens happens.

It's when we start making the same mistakes and don't learn that I will start to get uneasy. But I just can't see that happening.

We are going to put our love length right into some East Midlands dirt boxes on the first game of the season.

Oh yes
