Targets from the non obvious leagues

Basically we all know we don't have money to spent, we probably won't spend any but just incase miracles do happen and we sign someone in January what players from the non obvious leagues would you like us to sign:

These could be Championship or lower, Turkey, Greece, Belgium, UAE, Brazil, China, Russia etc.

I'll start and name a few:

Kalidou Koulibaly - defender to replace an ageing distin and a possible outgoing heitinga

Matt Phillips - give some pace and competition for mirallas on the right

Jack Butland - give competition for howard

Omar Gonzalez - big tall strong defender

marco fabian
- better than osman and will not shoot like a 3 year old toddler

Mbokani - good foil for jelavic

Ok, who are they? Where do they play? The last two sound Argentinian

I can clue you in on Omar Gonzalez:

6' 5" CB for LA Galaxy. Born in the US, Mexican parents. I think he's 24 or 25.
Voted MVP in MLS Cup 2012, and in retrospect, many would have voted him MVP of MLS in 2011.
Won rookie of the year award, and defender of the year award in MLS.
Had an ACL injury this year that should have kept him out for months, but he made it back two months early, and looked even better than last year.

Strengths: tall physical CB that has long legs that make up for his lack of pace. Stellar heading ability in the box offensively. Positionally getting better by day. Good solid defender that gets stuck in and is a value offensively. Has good judgment on balls into the box. Wins about 99.9% of any balls in the air that come his direction. Leaps are tremendous.

Weaknesses: Distribution, distribution, distribution. He is crummy at passing out of the back. He has been better this year, but he will never be a CB that distributes well and creates out of the back. Also has a lack of pace and can be beat at times as a result.

Basically you need to pair him with a distributing CB. He is closer to a Jagielka than Heitinga.

Notes: He has grown out of MLS, Europe wants him and he wants Europe. He should have been gone to the Bundlesliga at the beginning of this year. Nuremburg wanted him, and on his first day of "training" during the MLS offseason (aka, loan stint that was to turn permanent) - literally, day 1 - he tore his ACL in a collision with fellow American defender Timmy Chandler (oh, the irony). He has 1 year left on his contract, meaning he will be free at the end of 2013. LA needs to sell him in January or June to make any $$$. And they will sell him.

His stated priority for January is making the senior side of the US National Team by participating in our annual January camp for MLSers/Scandinavians in their offseason (+perenially suspended Jermaine Jones). He has a decent shot. He's been climbing the ranks and due to our aging CB pool, he is widely thought to be a candidate to start alongside Geoff Cameron at WC 2014.

Not sure he's better than Shane Duffy, but do think he will be plying his trade somewhere in Europe. He's a gem that needs polishing.

I would have thought targets from the non-obvious leagues would also mean exclude the obviously-out-of-our-price-range players. Ter Stegen plays in the Bundesliga and is rated as one of the best young keepers in the league, I don't remember what Neuer went for, but even half that would be a stretch I'd think.

Dennis Praet at Anderlech could maybe be a shout, if the touted 5 mil £ is somewhat correct.
For someone who's been following the Bundesliga a bit closer the last few years I'd expect more talent from the weaker teams there.
Heung-Min Son at Hamburger is only 20 years of age, but is doing well and very versatile.
Bas Dost at Wolfsburg is a tall striker with a great record in Holland and a decent one in the Bundesliga.

I think even with Butland being a great prospect he'd ultimately be too expensive for us. I haven't looked at him much but Thomas Kraft from Hertha Berlin, fostered at Bayern, was a great player when he left for Hertha. Could be a decent shout, though I don't know what the price would be.

I'm confused, which is the transfer thread where shout out names of players we like, is it this one?

Matias Suarez
