Sylvain Distin vs you Beauts

*ahem*

Phil Jagielka.

Now, I love Phil. He's an incredible defender. Once he has the ball though, he takes his time, picks out what I can assume is a pass, and then messes it up and hoofs it to the opposition. Distin has indeed done this himself, but actually watch the both of them. Add it up if you will. Distin often passes to Baines, or runs with it a bit. He doesn't hoof it half as much. Oh and I actually remember one of his longballs working, unlike Jags' (Saha vs Chelsea -- wasn't so bad then, eh?)

Neville's terrible for it too, I agree. Another reason I can't wait until Super Seamus is the first choice.

I'm off the opinion that this is coached though. As much as I'm a huge fan of Moyes, he has never stressed distribution from the back or passing it out of trouble. Its heave ho half the time.

I've got to agree with you. Surely something that happens as often as this, and has happened for as long as this, would have been cut out by the manager if he didn't approve of it?

Admittedly, we don't do it as often, but it's still not gone.

I don't mind longballs though. Heitinga nails them most of the time. But that's a skill of his, and pretty much only his. Jagielka needs to learn to pass it to whoever's nearest, and then get back to his defensive duties. Or rather, Moyes needs to tell him to do that :P

jags seemed to be able to pass it out for England. says it all.

I disagree. He passes sideways a lot, and if not, then he hoofs it. Not as much as for Everton, admittedly, but he doesn't "pass it out", assuming that means what I think it means (i.e. passing it forward, out of your own half).

Mr Kendall thinks he's ok...

Former Everton manager Howard Kendall believes Sylvain Distin is a key part of the Toffees' defence now and has proved a more than an adequate replacement for Joleon Lescott.
The former Portsmouth centre-back was brought in after Lescott's protracted transfer to Manchester City just over a year ago.
Signed for just a fraction of the £22million which saw his predecessor move to Eastlands, the 32-year-old is now an integral part of David Moyes` team according to Kendall.
"Distin in particular is going strong for me - he's been a great buy," he told the Liverpool Echo.
"When you think he replaced Joleon Lescott, the Blues don't really miss him.
"Yes, they miss his goals, but otherwise, thanks to Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka and Distin, they have not suffered defensively."

(Did he really say all that?)

I agree with him, mate.

Our defensive woes last season were because of Jags' injury, and the constant reshuffling at the back. Jags and Distin are playing well together this season. Bear in mind we've conceded the 4th least in the league this season -- scoring is the problem -- and even when we have conceded it's usually down to individual errors (Felli vs Villa, Heitinga/Saha vs Wolves, Howard vs BBurn). Distin was skinned against Man U -- and badly -- but that aside he's done pretty well.

I know Distin's been crap lately.. But looking at Lescott's performances for City we ain't missing much..
He's right when he says that we miss his goals though

I hate this misnomer.

Here's his goal stats for us/city; games (goals):

09-10 - 22(2)
08-09 - 46(5)
07-08 - 54(10)
06-07 - 42(2)

And in 185 apps for Wolves before that, he only scored 8 times.

07-08 aside, he's got a very normal scoring record for a CB. He just had a lucky season that year.

So what how many times he scored for Wolves? He used to pop up with a few important one's. (That one against the [Poor language removed] in front of the kop)

Was good at heading the ball though, defender's must have hated trying to mark him and Cahill against corners and free-kick's

I'm just trying to make a point. His goalscoring record really wasn't very impressive. In the 07-08 season he was very useful, true, but that was just one season. He hasn't replicated that before or since -- or even come close.

He's not been that bad aside from the united match. Its just that he regularly f*cks up, at least once or twice a match. Birmingham should have scored from his howler in the last match. It was easily the best chance of the match. He seems to do this every game.

With Distin its clumsy mistakes. With yobo it was poor positioning and switching off - which he sometimes made up for with his pace.

If he can just stop with these mistakes Distin would be a fair player - whether he'll ever be any good in a battle with champions league teams is another matter. probably not

Oh what a surprise. Distin gave another assured performance.

And yet, just watch as next game, when the lineup's named, 1000s of Evertonians groan and scream "DUSTBIN!?"

So I ask you, oh unreasonable ones, why do you ignore the 99 boss games he has, and focus on the one crap one? And why do you not do this for... Arteta? For Jags? For Fellaini?

Right, dead easy this one (I havent read other replies so i might be going over same ground)

He gets too tight which leaves massive gaps in behind, makes terrible decisons, is positionally awful and does not read the game well enough. The truth of the matter is 70% of the prem teams play a direct physical game which plays into Distin's hands because that strategy involves alot of headed clearances. This means he looks ok most of the time. However when he plays teams with genuine technical ability and pace he struggles badly. The biggest examples of this are the Man U game and I can never forget the Benfica game at Goodison when he got ripped to shreds time and again by one touch football. I dont think limited players like Distin are good enough for Everton. I want players like Jags, Weir and Watson who can be depended on against anyone. People will disagree but Joey Yobo is a much better defender (when match fit, which he wasnt in pre-season) and is only out of the picture because he crossed Moyes.

No one likes to admit it because he is hated with good reason but the replacement of Lescott with Distin has been a disaster. I cant be arsed pulling the stats but if i did they would show that our clean sheets record has gone to peices since that change.

i don't think anyone is gonna say he's better than Lescott was for us.

It helped with our numbers though - Heitinga, Bilyaletdinov, Distin.

Although you could argue that only one of them is getting games this year and he's getting grief from the fans.

I've no problem giving all 3 grief. Heitinger is the most talented of the 3 but has suffered a WC hangover. He will never get a run along side Jags (barring injures) because collectively they are not big enough for the manager. So he is reduced to a 65K a week utility man who will probably jump ship at the first opportunity.

Bily is too slow, and lacks presence and he struggles to get involved. He has a good shot and get into good positions but that alone doesn't justify his selection. Everton need their creative players to to have the same impact as Pienaar and Arteta has had consistantly over a period of time. I hope I am wrong but I just can't see Bily getting to that level.

So these buys might have helped with the numbers but Heitinger aside i dont think they have heped the quality enough for a combined 24 million. It's my opinion that Moyes last intake has been his worst (I am not counting this summer or last Jan) and has contributed to our terrible start. That's possibily an unfair critisism of Moyes because by an large his acquisitions have been outstanding over 8 years. Especially when you compare what he has done to the mess the fat waiter made of spending 2 or 3 hundred million, but there you go.
