is there a least spineless person in the world than lee mason?

what an utter horror performance, players from both teams were going down so easily every 5 seconds and he falls for it every single time. he finally calls someone out for diving, went to give a free kick and then realised he would have to brandish a red card, so decided not to. how has wickham escaped a red as well? i mean as far as clear goalscoring opportunities go, denying a tap in from 7 yards is pretty clear-cut. he didn't even book him! we all know why, because he feared he'd made a mistake due to all the complaining from sland players.

the worst of the lot though was being shoved over by mccarthy, he didn't even react. he just ignored mccarthy like the nerdy kid in school tries to avoid eye contact of the school bully on the playground.

i mean how can you be a man in such a high pressure job as that and have no backbone, what does he see when he looks in the mirror?

the standard in this league is utterly baffling, it's a job nobody wants to do, and rightly so. all footballers these days are cheats, and they're being fully protected to do so - no punishment whatsoever, they don't even get booked anymore. why not spend all day diving? you've got nothing to lose. the ref on thursday was perfect, let the game flow brilliantly, can't argue with any of the refs we've had in europa, week after week in the prem they're just utterly dire though.

How should he have reacted to McCarthy? He was directly in the way of the ball, it was just a collision - and one Mason was at fault for.

this is spot on. He went to blow for that gomez incident, but then stopped... Obviously aware of the situation and possible backlash. The peno you could tell he was sure of it, but even then double checked with his lino for f***s sake... and then didn't even book him, let alone send wickham off. It was as if he was covering himself if it wasn't a pen. Two wrongs dont make a right, if he has given the peno he can't not send him off because he's not 100% sure it was a pen. This was a pattern of his day, McCarthy should of been sent off as well for his handball... But this was after the pen and he probably again felt he should of issued a red earlier so wanted to even it out.

Either that or he has Gomez, Wickham and McCarthy in his fantasy footie team.

I actually could see that one happening, his positioning every time we were in possession was atrocious,he was almost like an extra defender for

Sunderland, how the lad who brought down Coleman didn't walk is beyond me,more annoying was the amount of time he spent "deliberating"the decision was almost enough to put the Heebie Jeebies in Baines' mind to miss it.

He didn't even give Wickham a yellow, did he?

I hate the red card and penalty rule, but Sunderland themselves benefited from it against us when they won 1-0 at Goodison last season. How on earth you can not give the red card I'll never know -- it's one thing referees not seeing things or misinterpreting them, but he gave the pen, so he's quite simply just making up his own rules.

Wickham had a chance near the end as well, when he shouldnt of even been on the pitch, shocking ref, he didnt cost us 2 points, that was our own fault, but he was beyond useless
