He's a sure thing, which he'll no doubt prove for someone else should we fail to acquire him

Some very, VERY knowledgable people in football rate Van Dijk highly. He's only been at Celtic for as long as he has as they are desperate not to lose him.

Dont need to get excited to realise it'd be a decent signing.

He see's Galloway as his long term defender so sees no need to buy a CB under 25. We've just shipped out 2 experienced centre backs so they need replacing. Dann fits the bill. 28 is a good age, in his prime, no nonsense defender who is far better than the two we've just shipped out.

With Jagielka being 32/33 and Galloway not being fully ready yet, Dann fits the gap well.

The amount of goals we conceded last season because we didn't have a john terry type defender in our team. A defender that puts his head were it hurts and beats every centre forward in the air. Girouds equaliser for Arsenal right at the beginning springs to mind. Dann wouldn't let them score that header. Van Dijk is more a play first defend after defender

Don't think Martinez is looking for a young guy tbh. He really rates Galloway and browning as well as us having stones. Think he is looking for an experienced defender to bring the gap between Jags final seasons and when the young talent is ready

If we didn't have Stones I'd agree with you.

We have Jags at 33, Stones at 21 and two untested kids in Galloway and Browning as our centre back options.

Essentially, whoever we buy in as our 3rd centre back needs to have an element of certainty and, ideally, experience.

Van Dijk looks a good prospect, but he's untested at Premier League level and I think Dann makes much more sense in that regard.

If we're unlucky enough to be bullied into selling Stones this summer, Van Dijk would probably be number one on my list of replacements

However FYI I would love either at the club but I think VVD will go somewhere else after the Champions League qualifiers.

Dann is 28. van Dijk is 24...I would make such gamble. van Dijk will probably move at a lower fee like Martin Indi last summer.

Just before I leave the thread, I agree with this post

Van Dijk has experience playing in Europe, which Dann doesn't

He can take a wicked free kick

He can defend and attacK

He's been linked with a number of big sides

He'd probably cost the same as Dann but would be on lower wages

In short, Virge > Dann

Nothing wrong with Dann as a player, but if signing him means we can't have Virge then it's a no from me
