LIVERPOOL -- Everton manager Roberto Martinez has refused to rule out a move for Tom Cleverley this summer but denied he has agreed a deal for Barcelona's Sergi Roberto.
Martinez remains an admirer of the England international, whom
he tried to sign from Manchester United last year.
The 25-year-old, who is on a season's loan at Aston Villa, can leave Old Trafford on a free transfer at the end of the season when his contract expires, and
sources have told ESPN FC that Everton are keen on a deal.
The Everton manager, who signed Cleverley on loan for Wigan during the 2010-11 season, was coy when asked about the player at a news conference ahead of Saturday's Premier League home match against relegation-threatened Burnley.
He said: "We know the situation with Tom. He's a player I know well, I've worked with him. That's it."
Martinez added that he was reluctant to discuss Cleverley's future given that the player was still involved in a relegation battle with Villa.
He said: "Tom is a player who is fighting for something very important, which he's trying to achieve for his club. That deserves respect. I wouldn't expect anyone to speak about my players. I would never do that with anyone else's players."
Sergi Roberto was reported to have already agreed a move to Goodison Park.
Martinez is looking to sign a midfielder ahead of next season -- as well as a centre-back -- but has dismissed reports in Spain that he has agreed a deal with Sergi Roberto.
"No. No. There's nothing in that. No," he said.
