People really saying Roberto would walk straight into our team? McCarthy was easily our best player last season. Roberto is a decent player - but that's it. Yes he has potential, but he's 24 and hasn't even come remotely close to securing a first-team spot at Barca. No mean feat, granted, but Rafinha is also ahead of him in the pecking order.

People saying Roberto could be the 'No.10' - but he isn't really that type of player either. He's someone who keeps it tidy in the middle of the park more than anything else, and we've got 5 of those midfielders already...

Haha. So based on a youtube video and the fact he has been linked with QPR and West Brom before he must be awful? OK mate. You not seen the links linking him to AC Milan?

Why are we even after Sergi Roberto? He has been linked to Stoke this morning. Don't want to be trying to sign a player linked to Stoke cause he must be awful.

AC Milan are poor at this point. Stoke are better, seriously.

Granted they're not as good as they used to be, I think they're still better than Stoke. Player for player. But agree with what you're saying about Sergi Roberto, I can't see us signing him after bringing in Cleverly.

Where do you think the likes of McCarthy and Barry would be in the pecking order for a first-team spot at Barca? Who is it from Everton that you think would prevent Roberto from being in the first team?

Lets keep the chat to the players we're linked with please lads

Sergi Roberto's a DM/CM, right? Doubt we'll be after him, that's our strongest position in terms of squad depth.

Not in terms of quality though. I think we are weak in central midfield. Do we really want another season of Barry and McCarthy in the centre? Our central midfield needs so much more than that. From what I've seen of Roberto he looks like an old fashioned midfielder, as in he in involved in both attack and defence through doing his job as a midfielder. I don't think we will get him, but I think our team would much improve if we added a player like him to central midfield. He reminds me of Arteta a bit.

RM denied Sergi Roberto links a few months ago. FWIW

LIVERPOOL -- Everton manager Roberto Martinez has refused to rule out a move for Tom Cleverley this summer but denied he has agreed a deal for Barcelona's Sergi Roberto.

Martinez remains an admirer of the England international, whom he tried to sign from Manchester United last year.

The 25-year-old, who is on a season's loan at Aston Villa, can leave Old Trafford on a free transfer at the end of the season when his contract expires, and sources have told ESPN FC that Everton are keen on a deal.

The Everton manager, who signed Cleverley on loan for Wigan during the 2010-11 season, was coy when asked about the player at a news conference ahead of Saturday's Premier League home match against relegation-threatened Burnley.

He said: "We know the situation with Tom. He's a player I know well, I've worked with him. That's it."

Martinez added that he was reluctant to discuss Cleverley's future given that the player was still involved in a relegation battle with Villa.

He said: "Tom is a player who is fighting for something very important, which he's trying to achieve for his club. That deserves respect. I wouldn't expect anyone to speak about my players. I would never do that with anyone else's players."

Sergi Roberto was reported to have already agreed a move to Goodison Park.
Martinez is looking to sign a midfielder ahead of next season -- as well as a centre-back -- but has dismissed reports in Spain that he has agreed a deal with Sergi Roberto.

"No. No. There's nothing in that. No," he said.

We dont have a single player whos the best in the world at his position.

I know you will disagree, but Baines is the nearest we have to being even close.
I think baines was defo in the top 2/3 left backs in the world a couple of yrs back

He dropped a level last season and now he's in his 30's maybe he won't get it back

Also seems to be picking up injuries now

We could never buy the best player in the world for his position
Just young potential

Probably only city & Chelsea have world bests in certain possitions
