It is up to the manager to play to the strengths of the players he has. There is no way we played to the strengths of Beto, KDH or Ndiaye yesterday. Beto is what he is. Expecting him to suddenly transform into Duncan Ferguson is nonsensical. We absolutely need to strengthen but the manager also has to put the players in the best situation possible to compete and do their best. Moyes did not do that last night.
Whereas others would argue, that with with the numbers of players out already in a paper thin squad, and therefore a whole bunch of players out of position. They were the best tactics we could have come up with, and it didn’t suit a number of other players.
Unless we have a coherent squad, players have all sorts of different strengths. We played in a way that suited some and not others which is the best we could have hoped for.
We are 5-6 players off an optimal sized squad, with some of those not being played because of injuries, because of a lack of fitness (because they have only just arrived), because of a lack of experience and time to get over exactly how
Moyes wants them to play or stand react at set pieces, etc (because they have only just arrived), or they are just not good enough for the first team.
Last nights performance was absolutely predictable, as many people predicted we have written off the first month of the season “to get up to speed”. ANY points are a bonus, until we can get enough players in to have proper training sessions and everyone is fit enough.
The whole preseason has been utterly pointless and achieved nothing. Loss upon loss because we are way behind every other club in the league.
