You're right, of course, but they were all reasonably priced.

Barry cost a nominal fee after about £1m
Phil Neville cost £3.5m
Tarks was a free transfer

English players in their late 20s are fine (and actually we could do with one or two more if we look for younger profiles as well), but they need to be cost-effective. You can't be paying big transfer fees for players 27 or over and handing them big wages as you'll never get your money back. We've been down this road enough now to have the badge.

Gueye is another great example. We paid Ā£3.5m to get him back at age 32. If we’d have paid Ā£10m for him then this forum wouldn’t been filled with widespread whinging but he’d have proven good value.

People are so set on having set rules on the age of players we should be signing rather than just treating each signing on its own merits. They key is to avoid having them on contracts which result in us being stuck with them when they’re way passed their used by dates.
