Summer Transfer Window 2025 Thread

They want 62 million same as wolves got.

United stupid enough to pay it
People could say that clubs would be stupid to buy Branthwaite for what we want for him. It's the same scenario where Brentford have a player that is very important to them, still has potential to grow and has put in an outstanding season for them (after several seasons exhibiting growth and improvement).

….cost Brentford £5.8m, that’s the way to do it.
We do do that, but the issue is that on the other end, much of the fan base would be cryarsing about being a selling club and all the rest. Then he’d either agitate for a move & stop playing, which would see that fee turn into £50m when said same section of fans would be happy to get rid.

We really can't be signing Championship players unless they're by far the standouts in their team.
Not many in the Championship last season that were, or look capable of the step up.

Only ones i can think of is the Burnley Centre back & goalie.

Otherwise in terms of forward talent in the Championship, there's not much there that's ready.

I do like Dolan at Blackburn, Fellows at WBA & Hackney at Boro....but none have had that 'best player in the league' season.

You have to be prepared to take risks in the market and as a club we generally won't do that. Comes down to scouting at the end of the day. Id like to see scouts maybe sent for 4-6 weeks into Europe and told they are working to no brief but banned from watching the top 5 leagues so have to go off the beaten track a bit more and see what they come back with.

….virtually every club is a selling club, our aspiration is that our best players (e.g. Branthwaite) are happy to stay.

…..I’d imagine there’s a network of ‘watchers’ already based in various countries/leagues who make recommendations to the club.

I'm not sure it's right that we don't take risks, it's more that too many of the risks we've taken haven't paid off. There's a bit of a boring, easily disproved, notion that we only sign players with PL experience but we've signed players from all sorts of places for all sorts of fees and not enough of them have made the desired level of impact. We need to get better at identifying talent and value in the market, where that talent and value comes from is irrelevant really.
