No doubt it’s extra challenging now that the club has been in a relegation battle two seasons in a row, but very much agreed that it shouldn’t be a barrier for European players, especially young players on low wages. Look at how Southampton were able to convince multiple players to sign in January even through everyone with half a brain knew they were likely to go down.
For me the bigger issue is actually just what we can offer clubs upfront in transfer fees. I think it was overblown how some players spurned us for other bottom table clubs in January, since we know that the majority of our transfer offers have been either a loan or a perm with a small fee upfront. I’m sure some players were steered away from us for that reason.
Really we have to adjust the profile of players we target as well. The recruitment team seems to generally identify good targets if you believe the transfer rumors, but it always seems to be players who have already broken out and/or are coveted by better teams.
All this.
We simply have to apply a global player scouting model, and combine that with looking to make a trading profit on 80% of the players we buy.
There are players out there that would improve us (God knows, that wouldn't be difficult), that will cost less, in some cases significantly so, in fees and wages.
We should at least be able to make a start in this direction this summer and not limit ourselves to the safe, domestic market predominantly, which hasn't served us well at all.
Thelwell and the whole club should be straining every sinew in trying to identify players that can improve us within our budget, wherever they can be found, I accept the club faces issues, but we still, and despite efforts, have a lot going for us as well. We can offer a lot to young players, we just have to look to match their ambition and be flexible in letting them move on when the time comes.
