We just don't seem to learn . We've needed a striker since 2017, we knew Gueye was gone in Jan and we knew Zouma belonged to Chelsea. Plenty of time to get replacements? Yep. Did we get them in handy? Nope of course not.

Why Gueye is going without a replacement is beyond me, if anyone doubts we need money that is proof. We are pandering to PSG of all clubs!!

So we did make a bid of £52m, which was rejected, which begs the question as to why we bid that little, knowing Arsenal were laughed at with their £40m bid. Crystal Palace are known to want £80m. Additionally, if the manager wants him, go get him. Who cares about maintaining a good relationship with Palace?
Going in 25% higher than the only bidder is hardly bidding ‘that little’. Not sure you’d be a great negotiator.

What do Palace have to gain from such a scenario?
Why wouldn't they just come out themselves and say they rejected the bid?

Clubs generally dont given running narratives of when bids are made or rejected. Palace are rumourued to have bid £8m for McCarthy, but neither us or Palace have said anything.

By leaking it to the press it puts more pressure on Everton. Gets our fans excited, raises expectations but also gives us a big headache given that two current squad players are involved in the deal.

If it puts us off and we walk away, that might be what Palace want (and its probably we will do). Alternatively, they might think we will go back in with another bid (which I think would be silly given the numbers quoted).

Nah can't see it

They want £80m. They aren’t going below their valuation. Bidding £52m is only slightly less laughable than bidding £40m.
