And there's the rub of it. We think we've splashed the cash and Chelsea have been quiet, when the reality is they've spent about £40m more than us.

I think Utd pulled out cos they got word that Bale may become available. If Madrid sign the Monaco kid, and it'll kick start the big moves, both Utd and Chelsea will be in for Bale and then they'll (especially Utd) have players surplus to requirements, as they try and recoup some of the money.

Wouldn't say he's past it, when he's fit he's still good. The problem is he's never fit; his body is in a permanent state of recovery/breaking down again. Wouldn't sign him unless they are confident they can keep him fit for a considerable part of the season.
