Summer Transfer Window 2017

the other side to this is that mainly recruiting players from below you all the time develops an inferior complex within the league when it comes to challenging the clubs at the top. You cannot expect to challenge if the players you sign are very much experienced in not being succesful. some of the names mentioned would improve us yes, but year after year that mind set will become the norm, and essentially will develop into us being simply a feeder club of sorts, players joining us to play at the level that will get them noticed elsewhere to move on again.

I genuinely believe we should be developing our own players to improve over time. sign the young players with potential and develop a team out of them. your williams and Schneiderlin players are great short term, the young players who will improve will be the long term answer.

Rather than look for the best players in the worst teams, how about we just have our own players?

Because currently our own players then would bolster the squad aren't as good as those players? If we just stopped signing players this summer we'd get relegated.

We're also not saying do this cherry-picking forever but top teams do it with us so why shouldn't we do it with those below? They'll help us get Europe again where the exposure should allow us to get the highest calibre players.

Right now I'd rather go for attainable that fantasise about these superstars and end up with Valencia on loan again but maybe I'm just too pragmatic.

That's actually the best way to improve at first - look at City.

We're not yet in a position that we can be confident of 100% getting a deal for a player at a top club (i.e. Koulibaly) over the line.

However, there's no doubt that players like Keane or Sigurdsson would improve us.

It's irrelevant which club they play for. If they are better than what we have and the price is right, they should be brought in.

Same goes for Rooney. He's better than what we have, if the deal is a good one for the club then we should do it. If not there's other targets.

Didnt City go all out to get a a marquee signing on Robinho?

Depends. I was one of the only ones who was delighted to be signing Gueye when he was coming from a worse club. Keane has had one good season (he has done very well don't get me wrong) and there is a chance that his partnership with Mee is a big part in what makes him look good. Sigurdsson I am not really convinced by. His stats are really good dont get me wrong and on the surface he seems like a no brainer but how much of it is down to his situation at Swansea? He is the big fish there in a small pond. Can he do a similar job at another club? Who knows?

Keane and Sigurdsson are good enough to be playing for us I reckon, however are they what we need to take us to the next level? I am not 100% convinced about that.

Do we not need to define what the next level really is though? We've just got EL due to favourable cup results elsewhere. In my eyes the next step is finishing 5th/6th which they can help take us to. After that we buy better again and the step after that is Top 4.

Seems to be a rush to get to the top on this forum.

the difference with the top clubs doing it and us is that they can back their deals up. They aren't just signing from below them, they are signing the best out there with clubs more likely to deal. when it comes to us for example we are challenging for Europe most of the time and certainly at the level just below the top teams. Whereas signing from relegation teams for example is completely different, as they are used to experiencing a losing mentality and fill the squad with enough of that like we have done and the team are never going to kick on.

the subject is not black and white though. It isn't two shelves with one containing top players who will never sign and the other with bottom half players only to choose from. We can be signing the young players from across the world to develop a competitive squad with. Sign players from teams around us, never mind cherry picking the players below us, do it from around us, like them lot did with saints. Sign the players who just can't make it at the teams above us (schneiderlin) because they were good enough to be bought by them in the first place.

Point is, there is so many different avenues we can go down and signing just below us is never going to be a succesful strategy. Take this summer for example, stek=back up, Williams=relegation battle, Gueye = relegated, Bolasie = relegation battle, Valencia = couldn't get a game. If you take a step back for a moment, considering how many players who aren't winners we already have and add that type of player to them, then wonder why we look beat when spurs and chelsea take the lead, there is your answer. I don't mean that is the sole reason but the point i mean is the mind set created 2 years down the line for example will never win us anything or get the team anywhere near the top teams. It is all mentality, we need the right one. Same as why Moyes moved Neville, because he was a winner, not a fantastic footballer but he knew what it took to win.

Keane who knows, Sigurdsson yeah. More creative than any of our players and arguably the best set piece taker in the PL. Since we don't have any good set piece takers any more, that alone could take us up a level.

Only after bringing in the likes of Kompany, Zabaleta (he may have been a bit later) etc for very cheap fees from random teams, and then yes they struck gold (like we attempted to do with Koulibaly).

But Robinho didn't work out really, and he was their last 'marquee' signing for about 3 years until Teves rocked up.

They mainly focused on recruiting from teams around or below them - i.e. Santa Cruz from Blackburn.

Every team in the world recruits players from those below them - it's how it works.

The very best / richest sides have the luxury of being able to pick from anybody at any side.

But even those teams pluck from the best of the sides below them.

And in answer to your bit in bold - we buy the best from those around/below us to improve us in the short term so in the long term we attract better players and that breeds success throughout the club, meaning that the younger players who do come through are the very best.

Reports of the RS and Mancs going in 25 mil on Fabregas.

I say if a player like that is going for 25 mil we could put a bid out there too. Would be boss to have him servicing the ball into Rom.

And how many players of those be linked would you consider a winner?

Keane, as an example, might have experienced relegation but he's also been brought up by United. Do we have to wait for him to move to a Southampton before being able to sign him as then he won't be in a relegation flirting team?

I think people can become too snobby in football.

Leno
Martina Keane De Vrij Kolasinac
Tielemans Schneiderlin Klassen
Sigurdsson Dolberg Onyekuru

So in 12 months you have a brand new team
In one window replace 11 first team players
I assume you want us to sell Barkley and Rom , that's 20+ goals a season Rom
And all these players will gel straight away for the EL
Looks a good team on paper and over 2/3 seasons would be great , but all at once. ???

Pickford, Keane, De Vrij, Sigurdsson, Rooney, Henry, Tielemas and Dolberg are my wishes.

Realistically, we could get them all, bar maybe Tielemans.

If Rom stayed, this team could crack the top 4.

There are few better players in the whole league as far as having the ability to spot a pass and open up a defence is concerned. I highly doubt Fabregas would even entertain the notion of moving to Everton at the moment. We aren't high profile enough (yet). It's a bit chicken and egg, granted, but this summer we need players who will improve both our on-field performances and our profile (which is one of the reasons I get the Rooney thing). Perhaps next year we *might* possibly be in the situation where the likes of a Fabregas may consider us a viable option.

Also, just to note, most of the players we signed last summer have won things before us.
