I just think he rates him, he has a mistake in him but all in all he's not a bad defender, he's a good age and has a goal in him, I think he's as good as Lescott was and a lot rated him.

He's not at the level we aspire to in my opinion. A squad player yeah, but next year I'd like us to have a back 3 of Keane, Williams and another new centre back.

This is why I think he will want to take up the option on Valencia, were not going to get that many player if we are spend 20/30/ on players but will need some 12m ones
Even in the crazy market we have now a West Ham/Everton reserve forward who doesn't score or create (many) goals is surely not a £12m player? He runs about a lot and tries hard but if we really have designs on finishing above 7th then this is the type of deal we should be avoiding like the plague. No team who finishes above us will have Valencia on their wish list that is for sure and if he's not good enough for them then he is not good enough for where we are aiming.

Don't disagree, but by that rubric we need to buy around 22 players as there's only probably 3 or 4 players on our whole squad who the 6 teams above us would want.

Whilst that's true, cycling out players under contract is a bit different to deliberately signing a substandard player to a long-term contract. We are under no obligation to sign Valencia, we have had a year to size him up and, in my opinion at least, he has shown he is not at the required level. All transfers are a risk but to sign a player who has, essentially, failed in the squad he would be joining, in a system that he would be playing in, under a manager he would work for is madness. Especially when you consider the fee is £12m. I have no idea how much we will have to spend this summer but I am prepared to wager that £12m will not be an insubstantial proportion of that sum. To spend it on Valencia would be irresponsible.

I agree Valencia is not what we need , although "no team above us " theory is easy on the palate. None of the teams above us were chomping at the bit to sign Gana nor Schneiderlin.
We dont have to sign players that are good enough for our rivals its those that fit with Everton that will take us forward.
But yep Valencia is not for us.

Coleman (injured) Williams, Baines, Gana, Davies, schnerderlin, Barkley and lukaku are the only players I feel that koeman wants in his team to take the club forward. That's 8 players, considering Coleman will be out to new year and rom and Barkley liable to be sold that will require 5 new players required to for the first team. Consider we will be in Europe and the additional games and we could be needing up to 8 players.

Agreed.

And in addition, why spend £12m on Valencia if Defoe is available, as rumoured, on a free?

How many goals did Defoe score since January?. I've a feeling he was quiet enough after a good start the season. Old now legs gone swerve.
