Summer Transfer Window 2017

Its kinda worrying that we tried so hard to sign sissoko...he was awfull tonight again. Dodged a bullet with him, but would make you worry about koemans ability to assess a player

Oh yes, we tried so hard that we started negotiations on transfer deadline day. And all of koeman's signings so far for us and pretty much in the prem in general have been good, I'd try not to worry too much.

I think we might need to be patient again this summer.

If we're going to try for some quality players again it's not always possible for us to get our business done early just because those kind of players are often waiting to see if elite clubs come in for them. Their agents might be told an elite team is interested in them, so they'll hold out, even if we go in with a good bid and agreeable terms, to see if the other club decides to bid.

The problem isn't always with our negotiating, agents are often using our interest to draw bids from champions league teams, or attempt to. If an agent says their player is interested but then they start faffing around because they're trying to get other clubs to come in for them there's not much we can do about it, other than move to other targets.

Most of the time the elite teams do their business first because good players don't want to move to other clubs until they realise the elite teams aren't coming in for them.

I don't think it's always bad negotiating skills on our part that has caused problems in the past. We're often getting manipulated by agents. There's not much we can do about it if we want to compete for the best players, we just need to hope we get a break and one of them joins early as that will encourage other quality players to sign.
The only problem with that is that while you are thinking "elite" clubs, most players, and especially agents are thinking "rich" clubs.
Doesn't matter how elite a club is, if someone offers the right money, they will go.

I think we will be active early in the window.

It really would not surprise me if Lukaku and Barkley are holding off making a final decision until they see if the club is showing genuine ambition in the transfer market.

Cleverly 8 million
Naisse. 12 million
Lennon 7/8 million
McGeady 2 million
Geri. 12 million
These are players I think most of us agree won't be here next season so 40 million in sales.
If Koeman brings in 4/5 players at least 2 will go as he has stated he likes a squad of 17/18 and use the young players to boost numbers.
McCarthy due to injuries and the Irish situation is likely to go along with Mori (if he brings in 2 CH)
Newcastle bid 20 million for McCarthy and we could reasonably expect
the same again.
Mori at least 15 million for a proven PL centre half.
So thats 75 million in sales.
If the Sissoko money from January (30 million ) from January is still in the drawer with the Arteta money then that's 105 million with the summer budget which we were promised would be substantial ,so say 80 million
That's 180 million to spend.
Koeman has promised Rom big ambitious signings and said stay and fight for CL with us so maybe this year we are bringing a machine gun to a gunfight.
Koubailly / VVD or a CH of that ilk is 50 million
Keane 30 million Hart Pickford Forster etc 25 million that's 105 million and 80 left.
That should buy two top class players to our Attacking /midfield options
Add Rooney and,Siggy
And for this reason I'm out can't be having Siggy

Didn't do so bad with VVD, Mane and tadic and Southampton.
That's a clear step up from the value of players he brought there.

It's like talking about Moyes with a Pienaar/Cahill vs....well, Fellaini. Fellaini was a good player but he wasn't, in any way, a 15m player. Just because a manager is good at finding people at a lower price tag does not mean, at all, that they are good at a higher one. Sissoko really should be a lot more of a concern than people give credence to.

Why would you use Fellaini, 27 million pound purchase by Man Utd, as the example that Moyes couldn't identify high price tag players as well as lower price tag ones?

I think that's why we will get someone like rooney or Hart in early doors. They're big names in football and doing that would show we mean business imo. Despite Rooney being past his best I'm convinced hed raise our profile going into the summer which would be exactly what we need to combat the sort of thing you're on about.

Kind of mate, but Rooney has achieved more in his career than Lukaku will ever do, thats just simple fact really, he's played and captained some amazing players both internationally and at club level, and although a declined force, i will guarantee that he can still do things both on the training ground and the pitch that no one in our team and very few players are capable of (just the frequency of such things is a lot less than once it was)

There was a massive reason why Mourinho wanted Zlatan at united this season, it was to to provide experience and a winner to a team lacking them in the most part. No chance on earth Mourinho thought Zlatan was a sure thing to produce in this league and at his age.

For example say we managed to get to a Semi final or final - out of our current team and add Rooney, whose the one player you would KNOW would keep a clear head and not let the occasion get to them and sometimes having that in a team is vital

That's all true, but the original point was regarding attracting players to sign based upon rooney joining us.

If were talking about an 18 year old wanting to join the club as a striker and can learn from rooney then I see your point.

Someone like a Koulibaly, VVD or a Tielemans I think would want to play with fellow superstars...

For 100k or above in wages each week I cant see the value in it when hes a short-term stop gap we don't need.

As you rightly say, for an icon (of another club) he would be good to have around and add a winning mentality to davies etc but I cant see how he attracts players

Same thing as @bluestevon and I were discussing about Rooney.

Now you're mentioning Hart. Last year if not for injury Butland would surely have replaced him as Englands keeper. He's now had a season at Torino where he's made some fantastic errors out of nothing.

Why would we sign Hart when we could sign Pickford...makes no sense to me at all.

Most players want both. If you're not an elite team they'll normally want more money.

I agree some just want money but if most just wanted money we wouldn't have had the problems signing players like last summer.

Big difference between tgectwo zat, Hart is bigged up by the media here, abroad he's not regarded as anything special, Rooney is the complete reverse situation.

Problem is Zat, your treating Rooney like he was just a really good player, rather than being widely regarded amongst a very very elite group of players, don't dismiss the effect it will have on fellow proffessionals to being the same team as him

As for the ones you mention, right now none is a superstar. They are all way short of that accolade, being able to bring Rooney in would have a huge benefit to further recruitment. Short term for certain, the season after maybe not so much if he is show to have regressed whilst with us.
