Alan Stubbs took charge of Everton's reserves for the first time on Wednesday night and was delighted with the 5-1 victory.

The Blues romped to a win over Wigan at Robin Park, with the goals spread between James Vaughan, Lukas Jutkiewicz, Andy van der Meyde, Lukas Jutkiewicz and Jack Rodwell.

The flow of the contest was very similar to the weekend mauling of Sunderland, with Everton conceding a goal shortly before the break to undermine their dominance and inspire a glut of further goals in the second period.

Stubbs enjoyed being given the opportunity to take charge from the sidelines, with reserve boss Andy Holden taking a step back.

He told evertonTV: "I have enjoyed it. It is interesting and it is obviously something I want to get into eventually - when that will be I don't really know. Obviously my main priority is still to be playing.

He also said on another Everton TV interview, that he would like to become a manager after he has finished football, whenever that would be...

...so the fact that he managed the reserve team last night - does he have a chance of becoming a coach or assistant manager in the next couple of years?

Hes not playing often now, and hes not even on the bench much, and i think he could be tempted to stay with managing abit...

We have to be really careful that we don't fall into the age old English trap of making someone a coach purely because we liked them as a player.

I read this morning that the Czech Republic has more UEFA Pro Licensed coaches than England does, which is frankly shocking. Lets make sure we get someone that's suitably skilled first and foremost.

Obviously this would be great if that person was also a staunch Blue and I said as long ago as the TW forum that the club should be grooming senior players in the 'Everton Way' so that they know the culture of the club and what's expected and things don't change wholesale whenever new managers take over.

Take Arsenal for instance. They play in such a way now that it's hard to imagine them playing any other way. The club as a whole must believe that is the best route to success and you would think they would be grooming someone to follow on once Wenger eventually decides to leave.

i dont think it matters if they have been at everton or not, its about getting the best manager/coach/assistant at the club. it would be a bounus if that pearson was an ex evertonian and i'd love to see stubbs take a roll in the club some were. but it must be because he can do the job to a high standard.

Perhaps Holden will make the move to be DM's assistant, with Stubbs taking the lead with the reserves. With the possibility of the kids coming through in the next few years maybe Holden would be an ideal candidate to help them make the step up in the 1st XI.

As far as I can tell, he has shadowed ANdy Holden and then was allowed to take the lead for a reserve match.

It is yet another indicator to me of the attention to detail off the pitch under the Moyes regime - the beginning of the "grooming" process perhaps.

Seems both a positive and mature approach, giving Stubbs the chance to learn some new skills and maybe grow towards a new role. Football graveyard is littered with ex players who tried to step up too quickly.

well stubbs is out for a month now with a thigh strain...

And he was in charge of the tactics yesterday, the players who played etc...and he won 5-1, i wuldnt be surprised to see him become a coach or reserve manager

I remember me saying this back on TW when Moyes put Stubbs and Carsley through their coaching badges. It is no coincidence that they keep getting one year extensions to their contracts. They will be around for a while. Moyes is creating his own assistants. He has a habit of doing that. He did it with Simon Davey(This was the first man to step aside to let Beckham take a free kick when he was on loan to Preston under Moyes, he scored) when he was at Preston. He had a career stopping injury age 27)ish) whilst under Moyes. Moyes then gave him a coaching role before he done his training. Under the guidance of Moyes he went on to become a good manager and now runs Barnsley(is it a coincidence that Anderson Silva is there on loan?).

That sounds the kind of thing Gaz. One of the main reasons clubs fail is that they constantly chop and change approach. The best clubs analyse which way they think will bring them success and then stick with it. With Moyes being backed by Kenright it does seem that we're doing this and it's good to see.

I agree. Being an evertonian is a bonus, but we should be looking to bring in the top coaches and staff that are available. I've nothing against putting stubbs in charge for a reserve game or two to get experience, but I'd strongly be against putting him in a job with the first team without the necessary skills.

What do you mean exactly?

Dont get me wrong, hes a nice person when i've met him.

Just dont like him, when he left Everton, he did the ultimate thingy by slagging the club off in the papers about his cancer, he then went to sunderland and when he left them he also slagged them off.

Would you want a man as assistant manager who is whispering the in the ear of your youngsters to go to another club to do a favour for your agent? its what he did with rooney.

Him being assistant manager wouldnt go in m opinion, you go for someone who is a proffessional, passionate about the game (not saying he isnt) but also has class and the way he has conducted himself to me shows hes not capble of that, i wouldnt want him doing it anyway.
