Stoke City.....Oldest

With the relegation of Notts County (1862) from the football league, for their first time, Stoke City (1863) are now the oldest football league side.

I know this is only important to those who realise that football existed before the utter insult to sport that was 'birthed' when League Division 1 was rebranded, but still.

...given their unique standing in the game, I was thinking it was sad to see Notts County go out of the league.

I’ve posted before, but I think all the founder members should have a unique insignia on their shirts to commemorate that fact.

Quite agree with all of that. Of all the founding members there but for the grace if god etc.

Sky would hate the insignia idea since none of their current cash collector clubs would qualify. The top clubs couldn't buy their way into it so they'd object too.

Let's do it. Just needs a starter, like a letter to the chairmen of each existing club.

Sadly the price of stamps puts me off!

Sheffield United came about in 1889. You may be thinking of Sheffield who are the oldest club - but not (currently) a football league club.

Interestingly the Sheffield league predates the football league and consisted of several clubs all of whom competed under "Sheffield rules" before the FA came along. Later on the FA adopted many of the Sheffield rules of play.
